Lethargy by Brian Patten
You have dreamt so often of what you would do
If your life were irrevocably changed
That when you are forced finally from the route best understood
And on to another, less obvious way,
You think at first fantasy will sustain you.
Sink then dreamer into what might have been!
For though on the brilliant branch
The brilliant fruit still clings
It is no longer reached with ease,
And its dazzle’s frightening.
You have dreamt so often of what you would do if your life were irrevocably changed. That when you are forced finally from the route best understood and on to another, less obvious way, you think at first fantasy will sustain you. Sink then dreamer into what might have been! For though on the brilliant branch the brilliant fruit still clings It is no longer reached with ease, And its dazzle’s frightening.
You HAVE DREAMT so OFTen of WHAT you WOULD do
If YOUR LIFE were irREVocably CHANged
That WHEN you FINally from the ROUTE best UNderSTOOD
Read the rest of the poem Show less
And ON to another, are forced less obvious way,
You THINK at FIRST FANtasy will susTAIN you.
SINK then DREAMer into what MIGHT HAVE BEEN!
For THOUGH on the brilliant branch
The BRILliant FRUIT still CLINGS
It is no LONGer REACHed with EASE,
And its DAZzle’s FRIGHTening.

on Lethargy by Brian Patten from @infinite_dwarf
"I love imagery. I get the picture (intended or not) of some person just drifting more and more into their own reality that they've made up. I keep tripping on two things, however: 1. The flow of "That when you are force…" -

"This indeed caused a little storm in a teacup a couple of years back! Or would that be a moshpit in a mushaira? I enjoyed this piece - although I felt it went on a little too long, so maybe a little judicious editing to…" -

Factotum
I'm a founding member of Neopoet and passionate about the place, actually will have been here 13 years on 7th March, 2020. Having been on the web checking out poetry sites for over 25 years I have never found anything that so suits my ideals. My writing is not for publication, it is for sharing. My skills and knowledge are not for sale, they're given freely.
My favourite aphorisms-
Property is theft.
In a dog eat dog world, it is better not to be a dog.
When freedom is outlawed only the outlaw is free.
I am forever unwrapping the eternal present.
