Honest Vices
There’s a strange honesty
in a cheap cup of coffee.
it doesn’t turn up its nose
or have delusions of grandeur—
it just exists.
a dirty Styrofoam house
for bitter warmth.
I find the same honesty
in hand rolled cigarettes
or other cigarettes for that matter...
I think it’s more honest in that
it tells you—
"I will kill you."
it doesn’t care for your social standing
Read the rest of the poem Show less
or your righteous morals—
it kills equally.
but whiskey...
is a whore.
heroin rots out your teeth.
Whiskey
promises peace
while it burns a hole in your liver—
Still I just can't help myself.

"I am me" by @The Eccentric poet
"Maybe that's why we write, pain and poetry go hand in hand. Pain holds the pen; we just sign our names. Wishing you all the goodness in the world." -

"Bad Luck Inc. " by @Geezer
"It dawned on me, Geezer, that even though you’re always dropping such kind and motivating words on my posts, I had never actually read any of your poetry! and since I only started writing last Christmas, I realized it w…" -

"I am me" by @The Eccentric poet
"I really love this. I write dirty realism, so I’m always drawn to simple, honest writing, and this hits the mark. You don't hide behind fancy metaphors or grand ideas—you just tell the truth. The line about taking yours…" -

on Mommy's Little Soldier from @Geezer
"been involved in a like war in my own youth, I can tell with certainty, that it is anything but civil; but I do allow for the feeling that one is referencing the family, and that is cause for the term; a battle that is…" -

on Ways To Pray from @quietremnants
"I'm not sure the AI's take really does this justice: the rawness of the juxtaposition of the various ways people seek salvation and meaning are definitely somewhat well-trodden, but that doesn't diminish the overall pie…" -

"I really enjoyed reading this! It creates such a vivid, energetic snapshot of nature in motion—the imagery of the blue-black shimmer against the olive reeds is lovely and really stands out. I also loved how you used tho…" -

"a poephol among the dandelions" by @Arkansas
"This is a brilliant piece of suburban absurdism. It brilliantly balances deadpan working-class slang ("me back garden," "poephol") with clever malapropisms ("gnoming pigeon"). Its best structural trick is the sudden, we…" -

"from the A.I. to make things familiar seem newly seen; is not surprising, but I think that the tropes that were mentioned are not so many "well worn" as he makes out. ~ Geez." -

"Joy in the passing" by @lykkeligere
"I love this. Your poem beautifully connects an intimate, visceral moment—tasting blood from a bitten lip—to the cosmic scale of dying stars creating the iron inside us. It has an incredible emotional hook, and it can be…" -

"This is a deeply felt piece of writing. You have captured a very specific, heavy kind of grief here—not the loss of physical life, but the slow, agonizing erosion of purpose and hope. It reads like a chronicle of burnou…" -
