The final moments of Edsel Ford
the living walk about, holding grudges
the way Atlas holds the heavens-
bitter, reluctant, but yielding.
who else has that luxury?
the dripping oil, an engine at its
overuse, and he watches in tranquility
burying his guilt with the corpse
digging a ditch with the edge
of his remorse.
a history unable to be repainted
in sleek black or silver, its ugly cracks
preceding the noises of a machine
that was defunct many years before
its user even noticed.

cheeks tinted with amber, still fresh
while the insides squeeze and lament
undue insults cut their way in, tearing
holes like bullets in between.
he might have then considered drink
to brush off each dim-lit memory
the dead man’s face, a hollow moon
that draws the tides of agony.
seeking forgiveness from ghosts
that are deaf to his crushing yet
enveloped apologies.
