Heel Sandwich
Heel Sandwich
It’s Friday afternoon
and I decide to make
a sandwich for lunch
before I go to work.
So I gather everything I’ll need:
Turkey, salami, bread, Swiss, mayonnaise. Plate and knife,
and set them on the counter.
I return to the refrigerator to discover the only bread are the two heels from a loaf of wheat.
I place them on the plate, flip them to put mayo on the end sides, and remind myself that it’s been years since I had to eat a heel sandwich.
That there are people in the world that would give anything to eat a heel sandwich.
That my ancestors undoubtedly ate heel sandwiches.
And indeed, there are many times in my life where a heel sandwich was a necessity.
As I was putting the knife into the condiment I looked over, at the full loaf of bread I must have taken out when I retrieved the meat, cheese, and mayo.

I shrugged,
smiled at my forgetfulness
and continued to build my lunch
out of the two
bread heels.
