The Dame of Africa
Sunlight beams, scalding air
Waves of heat distort the land
Devoid of life and shelter there
Mounds of amber colored sand
Welcome stranger, to paradise
This sea of golden emptiness
Of days like fire, of nights like ice
Flats and hills my grainy dress
Think of only three things here
You’ll find no single water source
Travel when the sun has cleared
Rest as daylight starts its course
Vultures roam my empty dunes
Rotting corpses their reliance
Read the rest of the poem Show less
Gentle winds that murmur tunes
Cacti stand in stark defiance
Humans travel through my heat
And beg their gods when death is near
Reminding all I can’t be beat
I end their days with thirst and fear
I bet you wonder of my name
I’m known as the Sahara
All the lives I’ve had to claim
Are whispered through each era

"The poem is at its best in its descriptions and no matter what the robot says, the strongest stanza is the 4th. The poem is weakest with lines like "Think of only three things here","I bet you wonder of my name" and "We…" -

"Die Your Daughter" by @Iris Marlowe
"A dark, confession of sorts, is how I can best describe this. There is nothing more beautiful than life, giving it, protecting it, nurturing it, guiding it. Our troubles have a way of burying our innocence, and bringing…" -

"The evening I got fired" by @A Hot Photon
"This was for me a return, to the days when I felt angry, and when punching the nearest solid surface seemed like enough to quell my anger. A glimpse of the angry young man I was, in a not too distant past. I’ve been fir…" -

"A Coal Miner's Story" by @ritam
"I don’t usually like free verse, but this time I actually enjoyed a reread of the piece. The feeling of dread going in, the ambient, the cave, the darkness, the thoughts of the men, the earth being alive, like a beast…" -

"I enjoyed reading this one. The rhyme scheme is very crisp, kind of gives it that kind of old-fashioned “charm” (I use that word lightly bc the subject matter is not so charming) and the story it tells of generational t…" -

"Just a reminder " by @A Hot Photon
"You manage to keep a consistent rhyme scheme, even though the lines are long. It’s beauty rests in it’s honesty, of what you want to do, and what you have to do for a living. A self reflection of your hopes and dreams…" -
