this familiar sequence continuing

without its former partner…

a place on the kitchen island your body still avoids,

not out of longing,

but because the pattern was shaped

when two people shared this room.

The pattern remains.

You lock the door the way you were taught

by repetition, not instruction.

        Two turns.

                A pause.

The Voice

The voice said, don’t pen poetry no more.
In your declining years, you’ll only bore
or disappoint like some decrepit whore,
who’s washed-up on a sin-soaked seaweed shore.

The voice, it sounded sinister and stern.
Demanding lines I’d laid I now must burn.
A poet, no, you ain’t, when will you learn?
Your poet’s page no one will ever turn.

This voice inside my head, of course, was mine.
(Son-of-a-bitch, a senile sixty-nine)
Who wants to hear a scribbling wind-bag whine?
In verse, cough up a poem line by line.

Mistress Library...

I was smitten with her silent air,
I thought she was so grand,
I saw her dewy decimal place,
I felt through her shelves by hand.

Her scent was unmistakable,
her voice did murmur low,
the smell of education,
the knowledge that she showed.

She told me stories of grand design,
of war and peace and love,
I heard epic tales of sadness,
I plunged the depths, I flew above.

For as long as I live

For as long as I Iive
I will always be your son
I hope I can always count on you
My Father
I am proud of you my father
You are the one who
Gave me my life
And that life you gave me
I live every day
AIso I don't need to be reminded
To pray to you
I do it automatic
Every night before I sleep
Also you keep me alive
Every day here on earth
And I must confess to you
That I just love to live on earth
The beautiful life you gave me
After you made me
Many years ago
I know that I just can't do anything
About getting older every year

Coming Home

Coming Home

I stood facing the door; frozen.

Slowly I forced myself to touch the handle.

The cold, stung my flesh.

Fear leapt for the my bated breath.

My lungs emptied on their own.

I inhaled deeply once more; held it.

It did little to calm the nerves

Sparking like an arching electrical surge.

A dozen years had passed since I visited last.

Those familiar tones started spuing all the lies

That convinced me

I wasn’t good enough to be there.

A tear fell.

valise

Valise

I kept the small case near my side

as the road bent through its off‑season turns.

Some days it felt light enough to forget,

other days it pressed against my stride

as if it had gathered the weight of the week.

I never checked what shifted inside.

It was enough that it stayed with me,

a kind of steadying presence

when the path narrowed

or the dusk settled early.

Once, at a long descent,

Call of the Loon

Listen to the call of the loon in the wild, at dusk, near a calm body of water on a quiet, warm evening. Upon your first time hearing it, the call of the loon captures your attention and then lingers in your mind. The tones harken to you, a lonely voice begging to be heard once more.

The Gas Lamp Grille

On a quiet October evening in the off season, we strolled along the cobbled streets of Newport, Rhode Island in search of a warm, quiet venue to hang our coats. The golden glow of lantern lights emanating through the windows of The Gas Lamp Grill beckoned and invited us in to escape the biting wind nipping at our faces.

DESPER-ROTT-O

he knows he's fucked everything up

he's desperate, crude and corrupt

he's the brat with a beef!

the demander and thief!

he's the chief, he's Sir Scammerly Schmuck!
