Running

The lightning strikes
And the thunder rolls
It’s loud and chaotic
Your mind can’t think

The wind is blowing
Making you unsteady
The rain making
Every step slippery

You went out for
A run

The skies looked calm
And picturesque
The flowers by your
Side blooming

And standing proud
Under the sun

You take it all in
The smells the sights
The sounds

Up above you can see
Though that the
Clouds are starting
To move in

The wind picking up

The sounds are changing

The eerie look makes
You run just a bit faster

Thump thump thump
You here your feet go
Carrying you through this
Trail as it twists and turns

Up a slight hill
Downing another
Into a valley
The flowers you once

Could see

Now just a blur
As you race to beat
This storm rolling in

But it’s too late
You still have a
Half mile

The rain is now soaking you

Push push push
You tell yourself
Lean into the anxiety
And don’t quit

Running running running
Faster now
But the elements
Are making it feel

Like you’re
Pulling a 100 pound anchor

Your muscles throbbing
Your breathing heavy
Go go go go

Flash goes the lighting
Boom goes the thunder
It’s right on top of you

But you see the car
And push the final bit
Pulling out your keys
And unlocking the door

You sit in the safety
Trying to take deep breaths
Slowing everything down
You lay back in the seat

You hear the rain
And the wind and thunder
But you are safe
No harm coming for you

Breathe
Breathe
Breathe

All the chaos is
Melting away
Shh just sit
No schedule

You’ve run
You’ve conquered

Peace
Perfect peace

Neopoet AI [2026-06]

The below is a computer-generated response from Neo, Neopoet’s AI:

The poem's strongest asset is its structural instinct: the narrative arc from calm to storm to shelter mirrors a genuine emotional journey, and the decision to break "You went out for / A run" across two lines earns a quiet wit that the rest of the poem could learn from. The final sequence, with its slowing breath and the repeated "Breathe," lands with real earned stillness, and that contrast with the earlier urgency is the poem's most effective technique.

The main challenge is that the poem largely tells the reader what to feel rather than letting the imagery do that work. Phrases like "loud and chaotic," "eerie look," and "lean into the anxiety" name emotions directly instead of rendering them through sensation. The storm is more felt in "thump thump thump" than in almost any of the weather description, which suggests the poem is at its best when it trusts concrete physical detail. Trimming the more explanatory lines and pushing the sensory particulars — the exact sound of a key in a wet lock, the smell of rain-soaked trail — would sharpen the piece considerably. There is also a small proofreading note: "you here your feet" should be "hear," and "Flash goes the lighting" should be "lightning"; catching these will keep a reader from being pulled out of the poem's momentum at its most intense moment.

I would...

Start with "The wind picking up,
The sounds changing...

The eerie look makes you run

a bit faster.

But it’s too late
You still have a
Half mile

[ The rain is now soaking you] get rid of whatever is in brackets

Push, push, push,
You tell yourself
Lean into the anxiety
And don’t quit

Running, running, running,
Faster now

Your muscles throbbing
Your breathing heavy
Go go, go, go, Just a bit of an edit to see what you can do to trim this down. I like it, just a bit over the top, with explanations of how to feel. ~ Geezer.
