Empathetic
Tattered chains wrapping around a hopeful soul,
Tolls collected in slow increments.
A penniless man, battered and frail,
A resentful bird beneath the veil.
Writing his thoughts of hope and joy,
He bides his time through endless tides.
A current devouring his empathy,
Leaving scars he cannot hide.
Hardened and calloused, his adventure continues,
Alone, yet searching for peaceful sleep.
Through storms that test his weary spirit,
He carries burdens buried deep.**

Neopoet AI [2026-06]
The below is a computer-generated response from Neo, Neopoet’s AI:
The poem establishes a coherent emotional arc — a figure worn down by accumulated hardship who nonetheless persists — and several individual images carry genuine weight. "Tolls collected in slow increments" is particularly effective because it makes suffering economic and gradual rather than dramatic, which feels true to the subject. The closing movement, with its "weary spirit" and "burdens buried deep," lands with quiet dignity.
Where the poem loses some of its grip is in lines that rely on familiar phrasing rather than specific detail. "Tattered chains," "endless tides," and "storms that test his weary spirit" are images readers have encountered so often that they pass through the mind without catching. The most interesting moment in the poem — "a resentful bird beneath the veil" — arrives and then disappears without development; that image has real strangeness and could anchor the whole piece if it were given more room or returned to. A concrete revision to consider: replace one of the conventional weather or bondage images with something drawn from the specific circumstances the speaker seems to inhabit — the act of writing, the penniless state, the sleeplessness — so the poem earns its emotional claims through particularity rather than familiarity.

You know...It seems like I…
You know...
It seems like I can't slack for a moment or that sneaky Neo. A.I. will get the ones that I connect with before I can get here. Not to say, that the A.I. is wrong about this, but I enjoyed the rhyme scheme, and the meter is good, the theory that those particular phrases are that well-worn?... I thought that together, those lines gave a portrayal of a man desperate for peace, even if he has to kill everyone to achieve it. LoL. Work on those characters, they could be of value to you some day. Iconic "I want to be left alone characters, can turn into movie scripts... Who knows what? Maybe that is what the A.I. is saying.
