The Caretaker
The Caretaker
My home, once my refuge,
Now my ironclad prison
Is looking in need of care.
It doesn't complain.
I don't complain.
I sometimes cry.
Paint. Chipped.
Hardwood floors
scraped and stripped bare
by his walker's legs.
Custom Kitchen Cabinets
once envied Cherrywood,
now distressed and scratched

from battles with wheelchairs.
No escape on the horizon.
I'm under indefinite house arrest.
The guards live
inside my head.
I try to break out.
Not out of my home,
but from my head.
Even my thoughts
are brought to trial,
Where I am
the accused, judge, and jury.
Where I am found guilty.
Even confession,
"Yes, I want a life,"
Brings no mercy.
I cannot smile enough.
I cannot sit with him enough.
I cannot hold his hand enough.
I cannot move fast enough.
I cannot prevent every fall.
I cannot lift his wheelchair today.
