JACK NOT SO NIIMBLE

 Jack, not so nimble

Jack be nimble
Jack be quick
Jack, why did you jump
Over that damned candlestick.
Was it your act against Life’s absurdity
As Sartre would say
Or simply proof of your dexterity.
We humans do such foolish things
Driven by the fear of Death’s sting.
But Jack, my friend,
A foolish act
And unnecessary
For  you see in the end
That flame was an impossible task
And not to be crass
You burned more than your ass.
Metaphorically speaking of course.
It's water under the bridge.
No sense in beating a dead horse.

LA MORALE DE CETTE HISTOIRE

Yes, indeed
Heed what I tell
Foolish things we humans do
To survive our humanity.
We all face a flame or two
But must proceed carefully
Or our life can be a living hell.

Je saute, donc je suis
I jump, therefore I am.

Good laugh!

I liked this a lot. You told a very funny tale, and I laughed all the way through. Kinda reminds me of someone I have read before, not sure who...but he has a way, as do you, of fracturing a rhyme or limerick and then adding his own version. I love that kind of thing. I used to tell my kids and those I used to baby-sit, fractured nursery-rhymes and stories like The 3 bears, Jack and the Beanstalk and Little Red Ridinghood. We often made up different endings each time. Loved it! ~ Gee

Holding back at the same time as movng forward: is art.

Your poem and why did he jump over the candle stick? This Jack, it was just a childhood prank wasn't it? When we were children we took it for granted, and thought little of the reasons for doing things, and in rhymes we also thought that they were the truth, everything was the truth, our parents were the gods  of knowledge and were looked up to and admired for knowing all. Ha ha! But when grown up a little one saw the absurdity of many rhymes and became puzzled, sticking your thumb into a pie, well of all the peculiar things to do? We immediately wanted to do it and see if we would pull out a plumb! Those rhymes have so many hidden adult meanings in them, sometimes totally absurd, strange and mysteriously real. They are potent literature I believe. I am sure many of us have jumped over the candle stick in one way or another. (or not slept enough, that is almost like doing just that and it doesn't pay.) On the other hand if we don't try to jump, then we might as well have been born a vegetable instead, we learn to take some risks and then find riches undreamt of, or not! So its all a matter of balance and some sparks now and then "nothing ventured nothing gained", so here's to the occasional leap, but judge well beforehand what the chances are of succeeding in the aim, as when one climbs rocks, one knows when one should go down again, when to stop!! That's it, that's all life. The cat advances slowly, deliberately, before he leaps, he is holding back at the same time as moving forward and that is The Art of Life. Oh her I go again talking out of my head, leaping in and writing when I am not always sure I know what I am talking about!!!!! Never mind I will send it for fun, I will jump it into the Neopoets and never mind the consequences, that's how I feel in this place among all of you kind poets, I am free to say what I wish and it is so thrilling to be able to without someone looking over my shoulder criticising my every utterance, that's why I can write the comments I do, I have no one to be accounted for-that doesn't sound quite right- but you know what I mean don't you? I owe some of this freedom to this man here Longobardolino mio. Love Annuccia an old horse!

Another Smile To add to my day.

I loved this, where has this beautiful sense of humor been hiding? I am so glad to see the importance of your writes taking on a lighter stance. This, as previous writes, is brilliant. Thanks for my smile. Love to you and lots of best wishes. XX

J.B. Longo-GeremiaMy sense

J.B. Longo-Geremia My sense of humor gets me through the bad times. My more "serious stuff" is cathartic. I needed the break for a while "on the wild side." :) Love to you, Joe
