January Winds

January Winds

Cool and clear December nights
And cold January winds.
December cheer and Christmas lights,
Now New Year begins.

Sitting alone, no-one around,
Thinking 'bout the times that's been
Makes your spirit feel so down,
Frozen by January's wind.

Wondering what this year brings,
Sitting in my easy chair.
With thoughts of love and other things,
Floating on the frosty air.

Wishing for December nights,
January seems so long.
Hoping for some cheerful sights
That says January's gone.

Hi

Rett you seem to have a SAD thing there young man, Just think each day is two minutes longer and soon the dawn chorus will awake you. The damn sun will be in your eyes at first, and then boiling your head, can't wait till the poem about the opressive summer sun comes out, or did I miss that one last year LOL Oh! to be in England Now That April's There, (Home thoughts from Abroad) not the lady either. Will see what we have to cheer you up a bit, I had some dried KUDU at Xmas but ate it all, so that's no good, have some photo's of our Spring here we will see what we can do. Someone asked me to write a hymn once I will see if I can find it, and post it on, You take care of you, Yours Ian.T

Thanks Ian my friend

Just one of those days. Cold and windy and bones aching. Supposed to be this way all week. Heat is bad, but the cold is worse. The bright side is there's no mosquitoes. *L* Respectfully, Rett: "Next time you think you're perfect, walk on water."

For some reason, other than my birthday this month, I have never cared much for January. I believe you DO understand. Thank you my friend. Respectfully, Rett: "Next time you think you're perfect, walk on water."

Down here we have 3 seasons. January, February and Hot. I hate January because I can't do much of anything. Glad you liked it. Respectfully, Rett: "Next time you think you're perfect, walk on water."

LMAO

Same here, but with two seasons: 'ahh, that's nice' and 'holy shit, it's cold!' the balance is about 9/3, with 9 being the cold! I've seen snow in April, I've seen 60's in December. I miss Virginia, at least there were all four seasons, and the warm to cold ratio was more like 9/3 the OTHER way! :~( ~Jess K. ---------------------------------------------------- -"And he talks to the river of lost love and dedication And silent replies that swirl invitation Flow dark and troubled to an oily sea A grim intimation of what is to be" - Pink Floyd

I definitely feel you on this one. January just seems kinda 'blah' doesn't it? Nothing to celebrate, still cold (massively in the north-east!) and still no hope in sight for spring. I used to get excited upon spying robins in the north-east, until we had a huge snow storm not too long afterwards. I guess they aren't reliable hope either. ~Jess K. ---------------------------------------------------- -"And he talks to the river of lost love and dedication And silent replies that swirl invitation Flow dark and troubled to an oily sea A grim intimation of what is to be" - Pink Floyd

That's the truth

I absolutely hate January. Not only did I find my father in law dead 2 days before my birthday, but the space shuttle Challenger blew up on my birthday a few years later, so that bugs me too. I just all around hate January. Respectfully, Rett: "Next time you think you're perfect, walk on water."

oh, Challenger

yes that was my first "Kennedy Moment." January (Februaury, and March for that matter) is kind of like being 19 and 20 years old. Old enough to vote, old enough to die in war, not old enough to drink. In some parts of the frozen north there;s not even sunlight during these months... perhaps we should take a hint from them and go back to sleep! Your ballad style is for me reminicient of "The Day is Done" by Longfellow. It's consistent, but I think at times shackles you. I see some really great poems in you, but I think (and this is just me) you're kind of kept down by your rhyme scheme at times. Of course, I can be totally wrong and have somehow only selected the poem's you've written with A - B - A - B meter, so I shall be more diligent. Mark W. You are most likely correct Mark

But that is what I am most comfortable with in writing. I write with different rhyme schemes at times and once in a while free verse. I have one Called "Mother Natures Child" I think you would enjoy. It is kind of my ultimate achievement, in my own eyes. Respectfully, Rett: "Next time you think you're perfect, walk on water."

Diamonds of January to cheer you up

Diamonds, the biggest you would ever have seen we saw today You wouldn't believe your eyes! :- Speeding along the road to the hills, passing the stubble-meadows of Autumn, lit up by the low-lying sunshine that crept like the palest yellow carpet over everything; pale because its winter and pale because the frost had tinted the objects, the stones, the grasses and the walls of the few dwelling places that are to be found there.  Suddenly when you think you have seen-it-all and no more surprises are in store for you as regards winter frosts or patterns, there were what looked like a host of seagulls, so many, strangely placed in relation to eachother evenly across Lake Maridal. On closer inspection, dazzled by the rainbow colours of the biggest diamonds in the world, the apparition was solved; it was crystals on the surface of the iced lake glowing, glinting, and blinding with their firework flashes as the angle of the sun reflected their surfaces.  What a sight, I walked down to the lake's edge and stood a moment rocking to left and right creating a kaleidoscope of moving pinks, greens, turquoise and blues as I did, at least to my own perception. Then I heard a searing scratch-like sound and discerned a tiny dark shape, a skater, way out on the surface of the gems coming towards me. What was he feeling, sailing rhythmically along across such a magic ocean, he must at least have thought he had arrived in paradise? Ann ( was this too long?)

Beautiful picture you painted

Can make winter seem beautiful even to aching bones and melancholy spirit. Thank you, and no, it wasn't too long. *S* Respectfully, Rett: "Next time you think you're perfect, walk on water."

Wow, this hits the scale and tips it

Loved this one Rett. It touched my heart. What about February? Its long also at least in Michigan. It does me no good to complain. I just advised my grand kids to skate and how to make a skating rink in the yard. One thing about being out in a winter night is that all the snow insulates sound. Maybe you could hear a snowflake drop. And when the moon is full and the flakes are light the whole area untouched by footprints in the backyard is like a million diamonds come down to wink at me. Repetition

Hello Rett, I am going to be bold and make a comment, properly! I find the repitition of new year stops me up a millisecond: new year begins new year brings I'm not so happy that it should come again I am not quite sure why. If you aid in the first verse "now New year begins" does it need the "the" rhythmically? And you would be putting us there with you. Now I have been bold and do not fel I have the right to but 'tant pis'!

Good call Ann

You have as much right to comment and suggest as anyone else. That is what this place is. A workshop to improve. That said, I thank you and will institute said change! Respectfully, Rett: "Next time you think you're perfect, walk on water."
