Smoking is Hazardous

Smoking is Hazardous

2/4/2000

As of this day, I have been off cigarettes for exactly
25 days. These past 25 days have been very hard and
are still that way, but I have managed to reach some
very startling conclusions so far.  Following is
everything I have learned to date.

I am not a nice person during these times.
So far I have kicked the dog, been attacked by
the cat, who ended up with more scratches than me! As
reparation the cat has made offering of bringing me
money, the daughter's cigarettes, even hunted down and
brought the cigarette lighter to me. I think it was
begging me to light up. As for the dog, he just looks
at me accusingly and stays clear.

The Missus is very supportive.
So far she has taken it in stride. She has
endured my screaming with fortitude. She did get a
wee bit perturbed when I turned the bed upside down,
chewed holes in her favorite comforter and threatened
to divorce her if she didn't go get me a pack of
cigarettes, RIGHT NOW! I must admit, a lesser woman
would probably have left after I wrapped her in duct
tape and threatened to put her out with the garbage!

A smoker's life is in grave danger.
It's not what you think; the health effects from
smoking are not the biggest worry a smoker has. It is
people like me that is their greatest health risk.
Just yesterday at work I attacked a smoker. It took
three contractors and two operators to pull me off!
Poor guy, I grabbed his cigarettes before trying to
knock him out...that was my mistake! If only I had
done the latter first, I could at least have gotten a
drag or two before they caught me. Oh well, you live
and you learn.

Young men are stronger than I am.
Four days ago my daughter forgot to empty the
ashtray and I found it. I guess they must have heard
my moan of pleasure when I inhaled the aroma of stale
cigarette butts and came running. Between my son and
my son in law, they pulled me away screaming and
kicking, before I could so much as nibble on a butt!
Damn this getting old!

Sad to say, I ended up smoking again two years ago. This is only slightly *G* embellished.

Aww, poor Rett

I can't believe you kicked a dog, and attacked a cat! :~( Here's hoping that the next 25 days went more smoothly! ~Jess K. ---------------------------------------------------- - "If we always give what we have always given, we will always get what we have always got..." - Mike R.

I didn't attack the cat

He attacked me! I just gave him more scratches than he gave me. The next 25 went better. Respectfully, Rett: "When all is said and done, Shut up and relax!" Rett

Rett...

another thing we have in common... I have tried to quit, and even have twice, only to start back... and I was very mean during those times too... just downright ornery... but my wife hasn't given up... she tells me often about the dangers.... I do need to try it again! thanks for posting Richard

Kelsey, I have quit numerous times

only to go back months or years later. Cigarettes are my bane. I am one of those rare people that never lose the craving. Respectfully, Rett: "When all is said and done, Shut up and relax!" Rett

Rett,

as I have just resolved to give up smoking (yet again), and am trying for two days now, I can relate to this tale of fighting against the almost invincible need for cigarettes... It feels good to know I am not the only one in the clutches of the "devil sticks", as Eddie has recently put it. Have a great new year, Ink

The best of luck to you Ink

I hope you kick them. I have tried and tried and still keep coming back. Funny thing getting off drugs was easy and alcohol even easier but these dang things consistently kick my butt. Respectfully, Rett: "When all is said and done, Shut up and relax!" Rett

Rett,

did you see proprietress´s comment under Eddie´s "One more cigarette"? There´s my reason for stopping. She told me the brutal truth about my own smoking habits and the possible consequences. I am keeping up the fight against the ciggys, Ink

woof.

I quit twice, for months even. one summer, visiting my grandparents, I didn't smoke. 2 months I was there but when I left.. smokers EVERYWHERE. it's hard. I laughed out loud at your slightly embellished tales. but shuddered when I remembered how good it feels when you have that drag when you haven't had it in awhile. quitting has become my resolution again. or at least cutting back. I'm considering talking to a doctor about it. a plan or something. kudos, for giving quitting a chance :)

Smoking is Hazardous

Rett, Yes, smokng is hazardous to everyone around you [including pets and breakable things] when you try to quit! I enjoyed this one immensely! _____________________________ To write a touching poem, you must gently stir the soul, if it brings forth tears or smiles, then the story was beautifully told. ________Janice Pearce_________

I smoked Camel Non Filters

for 33 years, finally quit in April 2007. Want to know how? CHANTIX... It was the easiest thing I've ever done. You don't even have to try to quit, you only have to remember to take the pills and it just happens. I only took the pills for about 6 weeks total. I don't even have any cravings, even after a few cocktails. Try it, it works!

Been there,

Didn't work for me. Might try it again. I have talked to several people that Chantix worked for. *sigh* maybe on the next go round it will. Respectfully, Rett: "Next time you think you're perfect, walk on water."

Good luck trying to quit, I did for two years then was exposed to smoke so I picked up where I left off. Chantix worked for me to quit.... Took something called wellbrutrin and thought I was gonna kill someone. Did not know if it was the pills or the withdrawal. I personally do not think cigarettes cause heart problems, I know to many people personally to believe that.(no arguments please). I do however think its an expensive habit, and it makes the house smell awful. When you quit you can smell a cigarette a mile away and you become very intolerant. I am going to be trying again. Patty

Good luck with yours. Nothing I have tried helps. I never lose the craving. Been as high as 3 years, still wanted one as bad as the day I quit. Unreal. Respectfully, Rett: "Next time you think you're perfect, walk on water."

you know, Rett

I'm not so sure what you described isn't pregnancy rather than withdrawal? You may want to get that checked out. Oh, and this poem? One of the funniest darn things I've read in quite awhile. I'm sorry to be amused by your misery, but next time make sure you knock the guy out first! Mark W. Proverbs 27:6 "Wounds from a sincere friend are better than many kisses from an enemy."
