Resignation

Resignation

I listen to the ticking clock
That hangs upon the wall,
But the silence in this house
Is the loudest sound of all.
I look down at the stains
Of teardrops on the floor,
Then I slowly walk outside
And close that lonely door.

Nothing is quite so empty
As a house where love has been,
And for some unknown reason
That love has reached the end.
Where once the love and laughter
Went bouncing off the walls,
The only sound, my footsteps
That echo, hollow in the hall.

I slowly place the For Sale sign
In the grass where children played,
And I think about the memories
That's in each and every blade.
The backyard barbecues we had
Now lost within the past,
Just one more look before I leave,
Resigned to it at last...

Good poem -

There's a lot of substance here. Your writing has a nice edge to it - it's a hard reality but under a lot of your work is some deep meaning. It's not quite cynical and detached like a lot of the poetry that's being written today. It's just sort of like a good old Southerner's philosophy on things. Keep at it!!!

Thanks Sam

You are right there. I cannot write from a detached point of view. No matter if I am writing a fictional piece or humor or whatever a little piece of my soul goes into it. Hard lessons learned and a bit of the romantic all go hand in hand. Thank you very much for letting me know that it comes through. I appreciate it greatly. Rett, another fantastic one

I recently went and saw the house where I grew up. Out of nothing but nose-trouble, I had a realtor friend of mine get me in when I saw it was for sale and I brought my folks. Very strange, lots of memories, but not the same. I was eerily disappointed. Life is like a novel, and it has many chapters. Thanks for sharing a few pages with us. Excellent poem my friend. Tom

I know the feeling. It is sad and the old saying about not going home again is real. Home isn't there anymore. Respectfully, Rett: "Did you ever notice that the politicians who want to ban gun ownership are the very ones that should be shot anyway?" Rett: 2008

Sounds like you know

exactly how it is my friend. There is nothing quite so lonely and sad as a house where love has gone from it. Respectfully, Rett: "Did you ever notice that the politicians who want to ban gun ownership are the very ones that should be shot anyway?" Rett: 2008

Thanks Richard

Sometimes it just has to be Richard. No matter the memories or the love that was once there, it just has to be. Respectfully, Rett: "Did you ever notice that the politicians who want to ban gun ownership are the very ones that should be shot anyway?" Rett: 2008

Hey Buddy, I am finally able to type. I have four ticking clocks, it reminds me of Grandma's in here. Hey, I am grandma... Ok so I hope this is a fictional piece.... I can relate to this poem on so many levels. But I stayed and made new sounds of my own. Hope you are well. Another good write fiction or not. Patty

Hi my friend

Glad to hear you are better! It was true many many years ago, but a new wife, two more children and a new house and memories and life is good. Glad yours worked out well and made new sounds and memories. I am Grandpa 4 times over. All my grandkids call me Pop Pop. Just seem to work out that way. My youngest child is 30. Will turn 31 in December. So glad you can write again. Respectfully, Rett: "Did you ever wonder if the politicians what want to ban guns went hunting with Dick Cheney?" Rett: 2008

A Splendid Piece Rett, love

A Splendid Piece Rett, love how reminiscent it is, looking at the past with both sorrow and Joy, Verse 1 and 3 rocked, the middle verse deviated slightly from the rhythm scheme, but I assume that was a conscious decision on your part. Bravo. M
