A parent's nightmare.....

I walked with my daughter to the store today,
on this morning that was cold, wet, and gray.

It started like most days that came before,
and I certainly expected it to be little more.

We took our two dog's with us for the walk,
off we went laughing and skipping while we talked.

My princess was excited as I knew she would be.
She asked me for candy and I told her we would see.

Done we were and almost on our way,
ready to say our good bye till another day.

And then this large looming figure arrived,
with it a spark to my memory was revived.

I knew his face right away,
I just saw a flyer the other day.....

He failed to notice my alarm or Glare,
"I like your poodle" he said with a stare.

I looked him in the eye's and saw his lie,
my little girl was one that had caught his eye.

My heart skipped a beat as I grabbed for my daughter.
That man has already taken little souls for the slaughter.

I raced home to the safe haven of all that is familiar,
I had to know if it was him, or just someone similar.

The information web is what I turned on,
as I hoped and prayed that I was all wrong.

But there he was in all his ugly plainness,
A predator who is no longer just nameless.

I may not sleep tonight or tomorrow,
I may need a little courage to borrow.

But mark my words and know they are true,
If you come near my daughter,  I will Fucking kill you.

I hope you called the police and told them that you made a positive identification that this creep was in your area! Love the kitty picture!! ~Jess K. ---------------------------------------------------- "Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way when you criticize them, you are a mile away from them and you have their shoes."

Even bad things inspire good poems!

I sympathize with your fear for you daughter, and pray that no evil befalls her, but even though this was a bad event, it turned into a great poem! Kudos!

Jiminy Cricket! That would scare heck out of me

We had a similar scare here when we got a flyer that a registered sex offender was living across the street from us and I had my grand daughter here. Ours had a happy ending of a different vein. After farther investigation we found out the boy was 19 and was dating a 17 year old whose parents objected and they were caught in a compromising position. The parents filed charges and now the young man carries that stigma. All public record. Yours is certainly something to be highly alarmed about and every precaution should be taken and vigilance observed. I would have went into panic mode also. I cannot stand a child molester nor a rapist along with many other crimes. Powerful write and unfortunately true one. Good luck Julie! Respectfully, Rett: "Life is like a beach. Salty, gritty, somewhat fishy and at other times, downright crabby" Rett: 2008

Tattoos

Child Sex Offenders need to be tattooed on the foreheads and hands, so everyone knows who they are and so we can teach our children who to scream and run away from. This should be LAW. So sorry for your scare... Tom

Yes, plenty of reason for concern

and I don't think child molesters should be able to easily 'blend' back into society. I understand and respect your point of view, but there's just way too much of this going on in the world today. I'm not talking about the 18 yr. old boy with the 17 yr. old girlfriend, but past offenders have been found 'unregistered' driving school busses, scout leaders, camp counselors, etc. These Tattoos would violate their civil rights perhaps, but they would protect the most vulnerable, the children. They lost their rights when they violated a child. Again, very emotional subject matter, a parent's nightmare indeed. Thanks Tom

Dawning...

Without concerned Parents it would do absolutely no good to make Child Molesters register... it is a good thing that you are on top of who is in your area... but the sad truth is... you never know what some folks are capable of... even ones that we think we know... glad to see that you are watching your child so tightly... so many don't. I see it every time I'm out... children running all over the stores... Your poem is a very strong write... there was really only one line in it that didn't work for me... I recognized his eyes, nor was he disguised... I don't really have a suggestion... but the "nor was he disguised" just didn't work for me.. might just be me too... I loved your ending! Richard

Your welcome...

although I only told the truth as I saw it... I do appreciate your thinking that I had helped or pushed you to do better... that is what it is all about here... I think your revisions have greatly improved what was already a very powerful write... I think you are a very gifted writer and I thank you for being here in the now of time.... Richard

Dawn

I would be just as alarmed as you were. I am glad you are aware of your surroundings. thankful that all turned out well. I am of the opinion that once a true sex offender ( not the kid like Rett was talking about) is prosecuted, that he should be sentenced life without parole, as they are not going to change their habits.

Nightmares, temporary and permanent

Hopefully your nightmare will be short-lived. I imagine you will just take extra precautions from now on. But unfortunately I know a couple who lost their child at a theme park near Paris, France. Their lives have become long-term nightmares due to this loss, because they think they were negligent and also because they don't know if their daughter is alive or dead. Such crimes certainly deserve all the attention they get in the media. It is hard to imagine an action that could cause more grief. Best wishes and take care, Robert.

A Parent's Nightmare

Debra Bryant, How absolutly horrifying! It is unimaginable that we co-exist with the most evil, vile and despicable monsters, and only by extreme vigilance are we able to protect the innocents from harm, and even with our watchfulness and care we are in danger more often than we can possibly imagine.
