Southern Boys

Southern Boys

All us good ole southern boys
Eat hog jowls and grits.
We sit around in the shade
Sippin' on mint juleps,

All us good ole southern boys
Drive pickups with a Rebel flag.
We are all Rednecks and bigots
With a picture of Lincoln in drag,

We all belong to the Ku Klux Klan,
Burn crosses and drink beer.
We wear our sheets and hoods,
Get our kicks from spreading fear,

All us good ole southern boys
Think "Deliverance" was misunderstood.
We all think the south will rise again,
That Mr. King was up to no good,

If anyone believes that crud,
Look into a mirror and see
The bigot and racist looking back,
I promise it ain't me!

Get the picture?

Let me put it this way Eddie

I got sent an e-mail from an Obama supporter that claimed most southerners would not vote for him because he was black. Personally I don't care if he's black, muslim, christian, jew, or whatever. I am just tired of people from the south being judged by stuff from the past. It is past. I don't like either one of the candidates because both of them are damn idiots. That's all, it just pissed me off. Bad day and a bad choice of words on their part. A person should be judged on their merits and deeds, not on race, geographics or political/religious affiliation. That is ALL that matters. Racism sucks! Respectfully, Rett: "We can all be thankful that Picasso wasn't a plastic surgeon." Rett

Rett,

I'm totally with on this. I can't stand it, when I pass a woman in the street and they turn and see me they immediately clutch on to their purse. I say go ahead and be angry. that is your right when people do or say something that stupid. thanks for sharing. Eddie

Thanks Eddie

And I know where you are coming from also. My oldest grandson is mixed race and there are still a few that do that to him. When I see it I shoot them the bird! He's a good kid, not quite as wild as I was. Respectfully, Rett: "We can all be thankful that Picasso wasn't a plastic surgeon." Rett

Yes they did Barbara

I hate being called a racist. In spite of where I grew up I have overcome as most all down here have. There are a few like that everywhere, but don't lump me in with them. I judge all races, black, white asian and all religions and non religious people on their merits and action, not on a stereotype. Sorry my friend. It just made my blood boil. We should never judge people

Damn...

I liked your rant Rett... and then I read all of the comments and understood why you wrote it... I am a true southern boy and I find it sad that we are still looked upon in the manner you have depicted in your poem... I hate racism as well. My best friend and I had an argument the other day when he lumped all Iranians in the "death to Americans" mold... I guess it pissed him off when I told him he was one of the media minded sheeple... to think for himself, I don't know if what I said had a lasting effect, but he's not mad anymore! Richard

Thank you Richard

I understand and am with you all the way. I have been there and lost friends and had some change their ways. I won't not like anyone because of their race and I won't like them just because of their race. I like or dislike because of the person they are, no matter the race. Respectfully, Rett: "We can all be thankful that Picasso wasn't a plastic surgeon." Rett

I've noticed the opposite it sort of true here in VA. Most of the black people go around with their snoots in the air, and will actually give a white person the "up-down" look if you know what I mean. Why? Because we're on their "home turf?" Gimme a break. I've been in a couple fast food joints, and the black guy in front of me gets served right quick, his order is correct, and the cashier is all conversational. I stand there and wait..and wait...and wait some more, and then they sidle over, and ask me what I want. No smile, no nothin'. Whatever. That's why I like the north-east. Make fun of us all you want, but at least everyone is on a level playing field up there. ~Jess K. ---------------------------------------------------- - "Everyone needs to believe in something. Thanks everyone for your comments

and support. I just get wound about certain things. Now, my daughter actually had the gall to ask me why I didn't like Obama, was it because he's black? I told her how she ever thought such a thing and she said a friend wanted to know. Talk about a devisive race here. Well everyone can think what they want, I know better. Sorry, that hacked me also. I think some people are just playing on the fact that if you don't vote for one or the other you are racist or unamerican. I am neither. Miss Carrie taught me better than that when I was a kid. In all honesty...

*prepares for a tongue lashing* I didn't have a problem with black people until we moved to Virginia. Like I said, in the Northeast, everyone is on a level playing field. I had a good number of black friends there, and we all treated each other with respect. There were no crude racist jokes, there was no holding your snoot in the air when the opposite color walked by. If one were to go where my in-laws are in rural PA, there is no bass-thumping, rap blasting shit going down the road. When we moved down here, things changed drastically. As mentioned before, I've been snubbed at fast food places, called a priss-ass white bitch, cracker and whatever else names they've given white folks... I had a couple black aquaintences at work, and they always poked fun at me for being white. Everyone that I've come across, especially the women, seem to have this sort of entitlement complex. It's turned me quite racist (of the southern ones only, strangely enough... I don't have the same feelings when I'm back north) and I find myself cringing inwardly when seeing/hearing one... an almost hatred at this point. I'll quickly point out that I'm not the only one. I know of 3 seperate people who took job relocations to the Virginia area, and ALL 3 moved back within a year because they said the very same things I just said. Most people from the Northeast are not racist. For some areas in the South, it seems to be a way of life. Out west, they're like the Northeast. Texas, New Mexico, Arizona.... I came across a lot of black people, and they were all very polite and courteous. I've no problem with that. I DO have a problem with the people I so often come across who think I owe them the world because of something that happened 240+ years ago.... and I say fuck 'em! My ancestors weren't even in this COUNTRY then, never mind held them as slaves or whatever. And we're talking about what? great-great grandparents here?? That has no effect on the present. It's not like it was within the last 50 years where my grandparents could have held their parents, thus making their lives shit. Whatever. sorry Rett, but stuff like this makes my blood boil too. Thankfully, we are back in the northeast now, and I can go back to being a "better" person. ~Jess K. ---------------------------------------------------- -"If your mother still drives you to school, you ain't no 'gangsta', pull your damn pants up!" - Bill Engvall

I lived much of my life in VA

and did not experience this. I lived all over there, from the border of DC to the border of NC. I am well acquainted with the area in which you lived. Virginia has some ugly history. One area I lived in shut down the schools rather than integrate. Racial tension remains high in places but, please, don't over-generalize.

Arrow, it may have just been in certain sections of the area

I just know I experienced it. Of course I've experienced being called a racist redneck just for being a southerner and sometimes I will tell you a hilarious story from the boondocks of Arkansas, that wasn't racist or biased, just funny to me because I grew up with those just like this guy when I was a kid. the comment was just a statement of what happened there. It happens elsewhere, but I can't say I don't see it elsewhere and on BOTH sides of the fence. Respectfully, Rett: "Life is like a beach.
