The Day of 9-11

We will never know the horror
Suffered by the souls that were
Sacrificed on that day of 9-11

They did not know what had
Happened. The confusion only
Added to their terror

Primeval fear and the human will
To live, drove them
Running, stumbling, falling
Down the many stairs

Running for their lives
Choking back the smoke
Choking back their cries
What last thoughts ripped

Through their hearts and minds
The ones who could not get out
The ones who had to jump
The most pitiful of them all

They finally jumped from the flames behind
Knowing that all hope had fled
They threw themselves upon the altar
Oh, my God! I could not believe

As I watched their bodies, still alive
Fall to the unforgiving ground, so far below
were they silent, did they pray
No one heard, we'll never know

Death so painful, fear so raw
Their bodies dead, did their souls
Then get up and run

Did the angels cry, did the heavens open
Did our God remove His hand, as He
Turned His face away

"Did the angels cry, did the heavens open Did our God remove His hand, as He Turned His face away." - outstanding closing stanza. This whole poem was excellent, but this last stanza drove it in well. ~Jess ---------------------------------------------------- "Live every day as if it were your last; one day you'll be right...."

It is hard, thinking of it

Evil simply had its way. Humans were the agents infected with hatred. God did not turn his face away, 'He' gave peace to the dying in the rubble of Ground Zero. The poet presents a graphic picture of the calamity that befell the occupants of the twin towers when terror stuck. The horror of 9-11 is still fresh in our minds and may it never happen again. This is a well written piece, Linda. Best wishes. T.

Thank you

T. for your comments. May it never happen again, indeed. I have read that if America does not repent and turn back to God, that he may well remove his hand, then he will have to turn his face, as it will break his heart

"that he may well remove his hand, then he will have to turn his face, as it will break his heart." - this reminds me of a line in the movie "A Few Good Men" - where Lt. Kendrick says: "and God was watching..." I know this isn't the USMC, but that line seems very apropos to the situation at hand. Have you noticed that we're reverting back to an earlier time in history? There are currently fighter planes parked in Venezuela and Brazil - running training ops over the neutral waters, and within perfect striking distance of the US. Russia and S. America have gone back to their claims that the United States is running a coup, we're the evil empire, etc. They kicked out our ambassadors, and in turn we've kicked out theirs. Very, very tenuous and frightening times we live in. I think God's thinking "enough's enough" and he's gettin' ready to kick some major behind. I think you speak the truth, and that this is more of a reality than one may think. ~Jess K. ---------------------------------------------------- "I just read an article on the dangers of drinking.... Scared the crap out of me. So that's it! After today, no more reading!" - Lex M.

I agree

If we knew the whole truth,we would probably refuse to believe it. We have waited too long, and I feel we are nearly to the point of no return. Keep your eyes on Israel, for they are the heart of the matter in these end times.

Linda...

your poem is a hard read.. hard because I can never forget the images of those people jumping to their deaths from the fire... my heart goes out to those who lost family members and loved ones during this tragic event.. thank you for submitting your poem... Richard

the people jumping was the hardest thing for me to see, also. None of us ever want to see such a thing again. Thanks for reading and commenting

Yes

I did mean did not.As many times as I read that I never caught it. Thanks. The thing I don't like about editing, is it puts it right back up on front page. But I do need to fix it

Brings back painful memories

I especially remember the couple holding hands and jumping. We must never forget, and thanks Linda for keeping their memory alive. I disagree with some of the observations and comments re: God turning away and America running a coup, but a very powerful write. Tom

I do not believe it was a coup, either. God does not forsake us, I know. BTW, the picture of the little boy and electric outlet, give me a smile everytime I see it.thank you for your comments.
