Imposition
Imposition
Slowly climbing and crawling uphill over debris,
gasping as though each breath could be my last,
I reach for that rock, branch, and out of desperation, the occasional twig,
giving each an opportunity to be an ally or entertained.
Debris, sometimes old and decayed, delaying my much-needed progression,
seems life-like as it appears to consciously settle in around me.
My upward climb is a tiring one as I chase breaths
that always seem to be two gasps ahead.
Over-thinking those things which require little thought,
my mind becomes like a crowded elevator.
It wasn’t until I began standing on the rocks
Read the rest of the poem Show less
whose purpose was to roll over and crush me,
that I realized they provided a vantage.
Or when I began catching the falling sticks,
and pushing the sharp edges into the ground to pull myself up
that I would grow in confidence.
Or realizing that moving in the dark with fewer distractions could be advantageous.
Learning that the branches prodding, poking, scratching, and falling on me,
could also provide shelter from the coming storms.
Like the day after a hurricane, the aftermath surrounds me.
Yet today the sky is clear as the sun’s rays strike the earth with life.
Stagnant thinking now thawed by the warmth is encouraging,
and the light is bright enough to open my internal eyes.
Could it be that I’m carrying debris from storms past,
debris that I neglected to dispose of,
now anchoring me in both the past and present?
Has redundancy and exhaustion lullabied my spirit,
causing me to sleepwalk through some of my life?
For the first time in a long while,
I stared into my internal mirror unsure of what I would find,
I realized that even the glances had been far and few between.
As I looked closer, there I was, bent over from towing hurt,
and carrying memories that brought noise to my own peace.
I have silenced my dreams, with restless sleepless nights,
sweating out heatwaves from seasons that have no recollection of me.
As I gaze at that internal mirror even closer, I ask myself a question.
Is what I’m experiencing now worse than the actual trials from my past?
If so, then clearly downpour isn’t always from the rain,
now is it?

"I really enjoyed the theme of this poem. Each stanza holds its own depth, and the word choices made are excellent. Also, the repetition in the last two lines really pull the whole thing together. I say well done, and we…" -

"An interesting title and theme, a creative poem about permanence of physical structure. The language was good, nice word choices, the imagery flowed with internal logic, left a feeling of profundity, an eternal rock. En…" -

About Me
My name is Allen Strother out of California. Born and raised. Been writing most of my life but hadn’t thought of writing a book until I released my first book in 2011 “Sleeping Through The Fire.” (Spiritual)
My second book “Behind Closed Words” (Poetry) released in 2025. Both on Amazon.
I enjoy meeting other writers because with our 3rd eye we are often able to encourage, awaken, stand against, stand for, save, and even help bring others to self discovery. All while growing artistically, and even healing ourselves. I feel honored and blessed to be one of the chosen ones.
