You Know You’re In Trouble When…

You Know You’re In Trouble When…
Blood oozes down the wall
Or if you find a large puddle of it on the floor
When your kid vomits green & their head spins right around
Or when they levitate above their bed & you can’t get them down
In your dreams, creepy girls sing disturbing rhymes
Or you wake up with deep cuts from a guy with finger knives
Toothless, dirty, rednecks look at you with glee
Or when you walk into a house and it tells you to leave
At camp the young, half-naked counsellors turn up dead
Or worse without their head
When the scary tree outside your window tries to eat you
And the closet ends up eating your sister too
Or when her new best friend is the beast
Also coffins start popping up, expelling the deceased
A shark isn’t looking for food anymore, just to kill
Or when its friends seek revenge on your family to get its fill
You’re vulnerable in space, thinking you’re blessed to be on this quest
And suddenly get these aliens that rip through your chest
You see a big guy with a chainsaw and wearing someone else’s face
Or worse makes a full skin body one to wear, seriously what a nutcase
What to do when you know you’re in trouble
Grab a gun, crucifix and holy water in a double
Skip the country and pray you’ll survive
But know deep down inside you may very well die.

Neopoet AI (premium) [2026-06]

The below is a computer-generated response from Neo, Neopoet’s AI:

The poem sets itself a clear and entertaining task: to run through a catalogue of horror-film scenarios under the unifying frame of "You know you're in trouble when…" That premise gives the piece a strong organizing spine, and the helpfully provided list confirms that the references land in a deliberate sequence. The conceit works best when a scenario is rendered specifically enough to be recognized without naming it, and several couplets do this well. The green vomit paired with the spinning head is vivid and unmistakable, and the "guy with finger knives" is a nicely oblique way of evoking Freddy Krueger without stating him outright. The closing quatrain, with its gun, crucifix, and holy water followed by the frank admission that survival is unlikely, gives the poem a satisfying turn from catalogue to punchline.

The rhyme scheme is the poem's main structural device, and it is uneven in execution. Some pairs land cleanly, such as "dead" and "head," while others strain the line lengths considerably to reach their rhyme, as with the space stanza where "blessed to be on this quest" pads the setup so that "rip through your chest" can arrive. Tightening these longer lines would let the rhymes feel earned rather than reached for. A related issue is meter: because the lines vary so widely in length, the poem's rhythm lurches rather than builds, which undercuts the momentum a list poem depends on. Settling into a more consistent line length would help the accumulation feel relentless in the way the subject invites.

A few moments break the poem's own tone. The aside "seriously what a nutcase" and the phrase "toothless, dirty, rednecks" shift from the mock-ominous voice into casual commentary and caricature, and the latter reduces the Deliverance reference to a stereotype rather than a genuinely unsettling image. Replacing these with concrete, dread-inducing details consistent with the rest of the catalogue would preserve the voice the poem establishes elsewhere.

One consideration for revision: the accompanying answer key does valuable work, but it also signals that some references may not stand on their own within the verse. The shark stanza, for instance, could point to any number of films until the list clarifies it. Strengthening the internal clues, so that each scenario is identifiable from the language alone, would let the poem carry its own game without the appended list.

Creepy! Love the references

Not a horror fan but I loved this read! Caught the Shining reference (I read the book) and I can tell by your grasp on the grim imagery that you’re a huge fan of horror

Thanks

Thank you for your comment, i will certainly try to add Child's Play on the list, i am a horror movie fan, there were so many i didnt put in because i thought it would drag on so i went for popular horror flicks that even non-horror fans would get, but i should have put Chucky now that i think of it lol :D

Yeah...

I can see where these films might have the described effects on young, impressionable minds. I felt the same way about the horror films of my generation, which were vampires, werewolves and zombies. Oh Yeah, the big one that really kept me out of the water for almost the whole summer, was The Creature from the Black Lagoon. Scary stuff, when you are in the front row looking up at that thing reaching for her ankle...    Anyway, yeah, I liked it, not really sure about giving the credits at the end, but kinda like staying to watch them so that you don't get trampled in the rush to get out of the theater. It will be interesting to see what you do
in the future. I invite you to read some of my stuff and certainly to participate, in my chat on Sat. night as Thekiller from 10-12 pm. EST.  ~ Geezer.
BTW, We also have Tink on Friday night. same time and bat channel, usually fun and some kind of game, lots of talk.
