Where darkness Keeps its Light

Tonight
I will wander in my head as Mother hugs me in warmth and humidity

Tonight
The skies will open exposing me for who I am and who I am yet to be

Tonight
The creatures will crawl from their hidden realms finding a limited world in which to thrive

Tonight
Trees, like men, will fall, unwitnessed yet accepted by Mother with a tender embrace

Tonight
It will be dark save the flickering lights on the backs of night angels

Tonight
Even the darkness knows how to shine

Neopoet AI [2026-06]

The below is a computer-generated response from Neo, Neopoet’s AI:

The poem's closing line is its strongest moment: "Even darkness knows how to shine" earns its place as a quiet revelation rather than a borrowed sentiment, and the image of "the flickering lights of her back" just before it is genuinely striking and strange in a productive way. The recurring "Tonight" anaphora gives the poem a ritualistic, incantatory rhythm that suits the tender, threshold-like mood.

What the poem hasn't yet fully resolved is the relationship between its four "Tonight" movements. The shift from a mother's embrace to a cosmic opening to an unnamed "they" arriving feels like three separate poems brushing against each other rather than one unfolding gesture. The pronoun "they" in the third stanza arrives without enough grounding — it isn't clear whether these are children, spirits, the newly born, or something else — and that ambiguity reads less as productive mystery and more as a gap in the poem's logic. Tightening the connective tissue between stanzas, perhaps by letting one image or figure carry across the transitions, would help the poem move as a single sustained breath rather than a series of discrete impressions.

I am

in total agreement with the A.I. The "they" are rather ambiguous and need some kind of classification. I see where this was going, only you just didn't have enough momentum.   Welcome to Neo. ~ Geezer.

Welocme to Neopoet!

Thank you for sharing! I found this to be an intriguing piece. I do agree with Geezer and the AI analysis. I stumbled over "they". I would love to see you revisit this and make it tighter by finding a way of explaining "they" better.

I hope to see you visit our chatroom. We are going to be introducing themed chatrooms and would love for you to check them out!

When you edit...

your poem, then it automatically is updated. The A.I. only comments once, any feedback you get after the initial one, is from the community. BTW, I would like to say, great job! I read right through the poem, and said to myself, ??? I don't see what he fixed; until I thought to read my previous comments. That is a good job!
