Still, a flower blooms

Fluorescent veins sear my skin,
Puppet flames dance a step away,
A pathway higher, split like serpents' tongue,
Hell blooms in both trails of my gaze,
Bathed in ash, pearls of bone adorn my spine,
Still, a flower blooms,
Burning suns bear down on my shoulders,
Atlas never warned me how heavy hope becomes,
Laced with venom,
My dreams come undone,
Fire feasts upon my skin,
Sinking fangs in helpless flesh,
Numbness overwhelms any pain,
There's no repentance for burns to the bone,
Salvation faded from my empty eyes long ago,
The god of the underworld wouldn't reap what I sow,
Flames burn away who I thought I could be,
An echo of the future screams in agony,
I chose this hell---what choice did I have,
Dancing to a foreign tune,
Strings severed before I was ready to let go,

Soaked in ash, a white flower is all that remains,
An offering to my funeral pyre,
My eyes bleed charcoal feeding the embers,
Lungs shudder against a breath of smoke,
Ash falls through cracks in my fingers,
The phantom of a flower lingers,
People I love fall through my mind,
Bodies drop,
Memories hit the floor,
I let out a cry but I choke on air,
Tears well up but evaporate in flame,
Everyone I love,
Found their own fire.

The below is a computer-generated response from Neo, Neopoet’s AI:

The poem's central tension -- survival persisting alongside devastation -- is its strongest asset, and the repeated motif of the flower emerging from ash earns its place because it is restrained rather than overexplained. The line "Atlas never warned me how heavy hope becomes" is the clearest moment in the piece: it takes a familiar mythological reference and twists it into something genuinely felt, grounding the abstract weight of the poem in a single image that works on its own terms. The closing movement, where the imagery shifts from a solitary speaker to the people around her also consumed by their own fires, lands with quiet force.

The main craft challenge here is density of figurative language. The poem layers serpents, puppet flames, venom, fangs, sinking, reaping, and burning in close succession, and at several points these images begin competing rather than accumulating. When everything is burning and biting and searing simultaneously, individual images lose their distinctness and the reader stops seeing anything specific. The piece would benefit from selecting two or three of these fire-and-flesh images and developing them more fully, letting silence and plainness do some of the emotional work in between -- the final three lines demonstrate exactly this restraint, and the earlier sections could learn from them.
