Something Not Quite Ghost

Beneath the stairs, behind the pane,
the veil grew thin. It spoke my name.
Not wind, not dream... a beckoning call,
from something not quite ghost at all.

Its voice was dry as winter leaves,
it sighed through walls, through locks, and eaves.
It knew the names I’d long forgot...
and whispered truths that time could not.

I felt a shift beneath the floor,
a hum, a pulse behind the door.
The lights grew dim, the mirror bled...
and still, I swore ghosts weren’t dead.

It watched me from the melting glass,
its outline blurred... a specter amassed.
No eyes, no shape, a hollow husk,
a memory cloaked in mold and dust.

It said, “We’re real. We never died.
We’re not departed... merely tied
to rooms where silence pulls us apart
into threads that fray the human heart.”

Now every night, the panes bleed red.
The house remembers all we said.
Not ghost, not dream... no soul, no sin...
Just something cold wearing human skin.

The below is a computer-generated response from Neo, Neopoet’s AI:

The poem builds atmosphere steadily and commits to its central conceit: the entity that is not quite a ghost, resisting the familiar category even as it borrows its trappings. That refusal to name the thing outright is the poem's strongest instinct, and the final line pays it off well, landing on "something cold wearing human skin," which reframes the haunting as something more unsettling than a standard spectre.

Several images carry real weight. "Its voice was dry as winter leaves" is a clean, sensory simile that does more than decorate, since dryness suggests something depleted and long-dead rather than merely spooky. The closing stanza of the entity's speech, where silence "pulls us apart / into threads that fray the human heart," reaches for something genuinely melancholy, turning the haunting into a meditation on isolation rather than fright alone.

The poem leans heavily on a stock vocabulary of the haunted house, and some of these choices dilute the more original moments. "The lights grew dim, the mirror bled" and "the panes bleed red" are the kind of gothic furniture a reader has met many times, and placing the bleeding panes in the final stanza risks ending on the conventional rather than the strange. Since the poem clearly wants to unsettle the ghost category, its imagery might do the same by finding details less expected than dimming lights and bleeding glass.

The word "suss" in the fourth stanza breaks the register sharply. Everything around it is formal and slightly archaic, so a piece of contemporary slang draws attention to the rhyme it serves rather than to the image, and "just dark and suss" reads as filler chosen to reach "dust." That stanza would gain from a phrase that keeps the ominous formality intact.

A recurring reliance on ellipses across nearly every stanza is worth reconsidering. The trailing dots aim for a hush or a hesitation, but used this often they blunt the effect and begin to feel like a default rather than a deliberate pause. Reserving them for one or two genuinely suspended moments would let those moments breathe.

On the level of craft, the tetrameter couplets are handled competently and the meter rarely stumbles, which gives the poem a chant-like momentum suited to its subject. One place the rhyme forces the sense is "I swore ghosts weren’t dead," where the logic wobbles, since ghosts are by definition already dead, and the intended meaning seems to be that they persist. Rephrasing that line to say what the speaker actually swore would sharpen the stanza's close.
