Sad Irony

I was sitting weeping on my verandah
As the sun went down over the blue, blue sea.
I thought: what is the point of clinging to life
When there's nothing worth anything for me?

And then I saw a little kitten, ill and weak,
And I heard its pathetic little cries for food;
I bent down to give it a tasty piece of fish
And it sunk its fangs into my hand real good.

About the Author

Region, Country: London, Culture Capital of the World

Favorite Poets: Siegfried Sassoon, Wilfred Owen, Rupert Brooke, Chaucer, Shakespeare to name but a few. And VERY IMPORTANTLY: Erich Fried, a leftwing Austrian of Jewish ancestry who fled the Nazis and became a British citizen in 1949., And, other writers (non-poets mainly): Raymond Chandler, Irvine Welsh, Anthony Burgess, Graham Greene, Charles Bukowski, John le Carré, Anthony Horowitz, Mick Herron, Margaret Attwood, Edna O'Brian, Maeve Binchy., Writers who I find vastly over-rated: TS Eliot, Virgina Woolf, Sylvia Plath, Phil Larkin, E.A. Poe, A. Ginsburg, Longfellow, Gerald Manley Hopkins (actually I LOATHE Hopkins more than damson-dappled words can say).

EDNA

A cat will do that until it is used to you.
The point found in this poem is that you had sown compassion to this kitty

The point was...

..that even showing kindnesss to a kitten went wrong. It was just not the author's day.
Just as well I didn't mention the dead horse I spotted in the garden.

Good poem, Edna. But yes,

Good poem, Edna. But yes, cats bite when they are scared, it's happened to me and I had to have rabies shots, because it was a stray that fell into our small pool. I was trying to rescue it!
Best to leave food for strays on a plate or the ground. Nice topic, I have a lovely cat. No nits from me.

Sometimes...

a bad hair day just gets worse! But nothing to say that tomorrow won't be better. There is always room for improvement. I like this, because it shows that you were hurt more by the notion that you were repaid your kindness by a bite than just being bitten. Yeah, sometimes it happens that way. I don't let that stop me from doing it again; but with just a bit more caution. Nothing to criticize here, although I would call this free verse, not structured western. ~ Geezer.
