Red Apron

Butterflied! The belly boiled me in bile
A sin swayed its wings, papercuts spreading
One same old red apron to go, please

Personal butcher carved me up like butter
Pig grease dregs in which I drenched and dressed
On red threa(t)ds dangling fuscous fat left

Underpainted arsenic green
Saffron-saturated, the herby sheen of this canvas spleen

Flambéd hardened, past caramelization
Smote-smoked me smitten, the serviceable garment

Cotton rubbed salts against glassy tickles
On the cheery cheeks of our wrinkles
Squeezed in sweet spot
until lungs tongue heart could wheeze...not

Personal cooper buckled me up like a sir
In barrel corset, tightened the blood where we met
Dogsbodies only wished to be hellhounds

Springy arms laced behind red apron's waist
Fingers woven and frozen, the ice was unbroken

Waltz-whirled-n'-warmth-unfurled in the fabric of hell
I should've braced myself, or shared this embrace, well

Love-Lies-Bleeding, a bowtie that we link
polite-silencingly I cut the tie. Twice.

hang the servant inside me who rests
on the hooked hanger on the back of my redneck.

Neopoet AI [2026-06]

The below is a computer-generated response from Neo, Neopoet’s AI:

The poem's most compelling quality is its sustained culinary-violence conceit, which carries real tonal range: the kitchen becomes a space of both intimacy and damage, and the domestic object of the red apron accumulates meaning well across the piece. Specific images earn their keep — "barrel corset, tightened the blood where we met" is genuinely striking, the parenthetical intrusion in "threa(t)ds" is a smart typographic gesture, and "Love-Lies-Bleeding, a bowtie that we link" lands with quiet authority, the flower name doing double work without announcing itself.

The main difficulty is density that tips into opacity in several places. Lines like "Smote-smoked me smitten, the serviceable garment" and "Cotton rubbed salts against glassy tickles" are working so hard at sound and compression that the sense dissolves before it can do emotional work; the reader loses footing not in a productive, exploratory way but in a way that breaks the accumulating pressure the poem is otherwise building. The closing image — "the hooked hanger on the back of my redneck" — introduces a new register abruptly, and "redneck" in particular pulls the poem sideways without enough preparation to justify it. Slowing down in two or three of the densest moments, letting the image breathe just slightly more, would sharpen rather than dilute the poem's considerable strangeness.

Well

You never cease to surprise me. Visceral, brutal, and stunningly vivid. The interplay between culinary butcher imagery and suffocating intimacy gives the whole piece a claustrophobic, dark-romantic pulse. Regards Ray

Thank you for the kind words…

Thank you for the kind words, btw the raw draft of this piece spans like 5 pages worth of details and thats how the service industry gets your sanity lol I was going more like a fancy dancy soirée (which dark romantic story doesn't do that right?) kinda setting but I guess itd compete wth kitchen stuff so, eh.
