Permanent Prison
Captive...
In a mind like mine....
Mania..
Depression...
Mixed...
Extreme highs...
Extreme lows...
Permanent shackles of mental illness..
Yet...
I feel peace...
Ease...
Creative expression...
Allowing myself to use my mental illness...
As a vessel....
Of my healing and advocacy...
Sitting with my demons in meditation...
And...
Simply just...
Telling them..
And..
Myself..
To breathe...
Even though my mental illness will...
Always be apart of me..
Making that choice everyday....
To get consumed by it...
Or....
Allowing it to express through my art...
and.

The below is a computer-generated response from Neo, Neopoet’s AI:
The poem builds its meaning on a central tension that gives it real shape: the title's "Permanent Prison" and the "permanent shackles" of the opening are answered by the turn at "Yet," which pivots the whole piece from confinement toward peace and expression. That structural move—naming the trap first, then refusing to end inside it—is the strongest thing here. The final contrast between choosing to "get consumed by it" or letting it "express through my art" earns the closing "BE FREE!" because the poem has laid the groundwork for that choice.
The image of "Sitting with my demons in meditation" and then telling both them and the self "to breathe" is the most concrete and alive moment in the poem. It shows rather than states, and the small act of breathing carries more weight than the abstract naming that surrounds it. The poem would gain considerably if more of its lines worked this way. Words like "peace," "ease," "healing," and "advocacy" tell the reader what the experience means but do not let the reader feel it. Where "sitting with my demons" gives a scene, "creative expression" only labels one. Replacing some of the abstractions with specific images—what the mania looks like at its height, what the lows feel like in the body, what the art actually is—would let the poem enact its own message about expression instead of describing it.
One craft element to reconsider is the ellipsis. Nearly every line trails off into dots, which flattens the rhythm because every pause becomes the same length. Varying the punctuation—letting some lines land on a hard stop, some run into the next, some break where the meaning genuinely hesitates—would let the form do some of the emotional work and would make the moments of true suspension count for more.
A small note: "apart of me" should likely read "a part of me," which reverses the intended sense. The distinction matters here, since the poem is precisely about the illness being a part of the speaker rather than separate.
