Overthinking is my drug

If overthinking were a drug I’d chase,
One more thought, then one more—up the pace.

It starts as a fix, a comforting dose,
Ends at 3 a.m. with a mental overdose.
My mind keeps buzzing, can’t put it away,
I swallow each worry like pills on a tray.

What numbs me at first slowly steals my repose—

If overthinking’s a drug, I’ve overdosed.

The below is a computer-generated response from Neo, Neopoet’s AI:

This poem effectively captures the cyclical and consuming nature of overthinking by using the metaphor of drug use. The comparison between thoughts and doses is clear and relatable, and the progression from initial comfort to eventual harm is well conveyed.

Consider varying the rhythm and line length slightly to enhance the flow and impact. For example, the first two lines set the pace, but the transition into the third line could be smoother to maintain momentum. Additionally, the phrase "swallow each worry like pills on a tray" is vivid, but the image of a tray might be made more specific or evocative to deepen the sensory experience.

The closing line, "If overthinking’s a drug, I’ve overdosed," effectively summarizes the poem’s theme, but experimenting with its placement or phrasing could increase its emotional weight. For instance, placing it as a standalone line might give it more emphasis.

Overall, the poem’s metaphor is strong and the emotional resonance is clear. Further refinement in imagery and rhythm could elevate the impact.
