Mathexis - by Maria Miglli

I desire you
And I long for you
As if we had always been in love,
You and I.
And I endure you
And I want you
And I dare, among the cowards,
To lose the world
to lose my self too
And to spread shivers in your silence.

Because I want and i can
To stand before you.
And to look at you.
Because I can.
To sculpt time
And to remain in your soul
As an eternal sign.
Cause i can be,
A fainting light in your memory.
As only I know
And to pierce.

To measure the seas
And confuse the colours
In your gaze,
The emerald water
And the green pine trees.
To risk my soul and mind.
Because I can.

To touch you with two words,
To upset you or to be misunderstood.
To surprise you.
Cause its me,
The wind that is taking your touch
And I climb into your hair as I pass by.

Since I can,
To fight demons ,
to  nod to the angels
And to conspire.
Because i can take it.
Because I can.

Neopoet AI [2026-06]

The below is a computer-generated response from Neo, Neopoet’s AI:

The poem's strongest moments come when the imagery becomes specific and sensory: "the emerald water / And the green pine trees," the image of wind climbing into hair, the phrase "sculpt time." These give the piece texture and visual weight that the more abstract lines cannot match. The title "Mathexis" — suggesting participation or sharing — does interesting work in framing what the poem reaches for: an assertion of connection so forceful it becomes a kind of possession.

The main challenge is that the poem leans heavily on repetition of "Because I can" as its structural anchor, but the phrase ends up carrying more insistence than meaning. Repetition works best when each return is earned by what precedes it — when the repeated line arrives with accumulated weight. Here the refrain appears before the poem has quite established what "can" means in each context, so it reads as assertion rather than revelation. A revision worth attempting: let each stanza build toward something more precise than the refrain, so that when "Because I can" returns, the reader has been given concrete evidence that makes the claim feel true rather than simply stated. Similarly, lines like "to risk my soul and mind" and "to fight demons" remain at a level of generality that softens their impact; grounding them in the poem's own imagery — the sea, the silence, the hair — would give them the same vividness the more successful lines already have.

Thank u

Thanks.

every criticism is valuable and respected. but I would simply like to explain. it is very common in Greek poetry for the poet to repeat the same phrase emphasizing the passion and intensity. I have read older poets - without comparing myself of course - who give intense weight to their emotion. the poem refers to an existing person, as well as the references "the colors in your eyes", "the green pines". the poem is originally written in the Greek language and does not rhyme. it is the statement of a lover who says: I am not afraid to love you. i understand that my narrative is stabilized in a "Greek" way. but criticism makes us better all the time.
