PRESENCE
We set up the dusty, black camera,
Connected it to the TV with the yellow, red and white cables.
They still fit.
The red cassette slid into the deck with a click.
The screen flashed.
Suddenly, your hair was dark again,
fewer wrinkles, and your skin wore more color than it does now
Your voice sounded less croaky, and your movements looked effortless.
Memories materialize of how you’d pick me up from school and we’d walk home together, hand in hand
Yours so much bigger than mine.
You used to tower over me.

We’ve grown now,
so much that we ended up apart
I remember telling you:
“You’re not my father”
right before the door was beaten down and angry stomps filled the room.
When you called me, you were met with cold silence.
Why had your hair fully lost its color when I saw you again?
I hadn’t heard your voice in so long, why did it suddenly sound like someone else’s?
Monitors beeped- cold, mechanical, constant.
You looked like you were struggling with every step.
Everything went numb when I’d heard about it,
hushed voices, beeping.
They said your bones were dissolving
and suddenly, so did all the anger I held towards you.
Despite it all, you hugged me like I was still small,
held my hand like you were just picking me up from school again,
but this time, you were smaller than me.
The cassette comes to a stop.
The screen turns black.
I promise I’ll play more chess with you from now on.
