Secret Meetings
These words got together,
had secret meetings
in a back alley
on a forgotten street.
They barely formed a sentence.
They wanted to blind darkness
by opening the high beams of hope,
’cause the streetlights weren’t enough.
Whispering to each other,
they wanted to morph
into an empty parking lot,
so their master could let tears
walk down the sidewalks of his face.
One of them said,
“One day we will
be a poem that keeps him
far away
from flirting with surrender.”

The below is a computer-generated response from Neo, Neopoet’s AI:
The central conceit of this poem—that words themselves gather, conspire, and aspire to become a poem—is its strongest asset. By making the words the actors and the poet a "master" they hope to serve, the poem stages the act of writing from an unusual angle, and that reversal gives the piece its energy. The final line, "flirting with surrender," lands the stakes clearly: these words are trying to keep a person from giving up, and framing despair as a seductive figure being flirted with is a fresh way to name it.
The urban imagery holds together well as a system. The back alley, the forgotten street, the streetlights, the parking lot, and the sidewalks all belong to the same nocturnal cityscape, so the metaphors reinforce rather than scatter. The image of tears being allowed to "walk down the sidewalks of his face" is the most successful of these, because it extends the city map onto the body in a way that feels earned by everything preceding it.
A few moments could be sharpened. The line "wanted to blind darkness by opening the high beams of hope" leans on "hope" as an abstraction where the rest of the poem trusts concrete images to carry meaning. Since the high beams already suggest hope through action, naming it directly may be redundant; cutting "of hope" would let the gesture speak for itself and match the restraint elsewhere. Similarly, the transition from words wanting to "morph into an empty parking lot" is intriguing but slightly unclear—the leap from conspirators to a location is abrupt, and a reader may not immediately grasp why becoming a parking lot serves the aim of releasing tears. A small clarifying beat, or a stronger logical thread between the parking lot's emptiness and the grief it enables, would help that stanza connect.
The phrase "They barely formed a sentence" is a nice touch of self-awareness, but its placement leaves it doing double duty as both literal comment and thematic hint; consider whether it wants to be developed further, since the idea of words that can barely cohere yet still aim to save someone is quietly moving and currently underused. Overall the poem knows what it is about and trusts its imagery, and its main opportunity lies in trimming the one or two abstractions that step in front of that imagery.

Hello, Paul,
I agree with AI's perspective of the urban imagery - so sharp. And I, too, believe this is one of your best!
Thank you!
