The Speed Of Life

When you stop to rest upon the slope of moments that is the life you live and realize there is more life down in your past than in your future, the struggle up the steepening climb towards your end gets so much harder as you wonder what the ones you leave behind you will remember, after you are gone. For beyond that brink of summit where all instants of decision come to their final end, all ability you ever had to influence their thoughts and dreams will finish, and your fears, your hatreds, the horrors you inspired will live on beyond the moment of your death in those you claim to care for. This is the time when speed of life becomes a dread of knowing that without the growing presence of your faith and understanding those you leave behind will think of you with bitterness and grief instead of fond remembrance, and in their own aloneness curse your name instead of being thankful for lessons learned, wisdom gained and unconditional kindness. So I make this oath: When I begin again to tread that slope of futures to my final end, I vow that there will be no moments when those I have created, and those who made them with me, will not understand the pride I have for them, and swear that when I step from brink of ending into the solitude of oblivion, those I leave behind will know that care and kindness, strength of purpose, love and gift of wisdom all continue in the speed of life, after I am gone.

That is one powerful poem! There is nothing worse than regrets. I wish I could turn back the clock but I can't.

Jayne

Thanks for commenting Oz lady...but there is no need to apologize to me; obviously, my poem was successful in eliciting an emotional response from readers, which is the whole point of the exercise. Thanks again Jayne, Respectfully Jim "Laws and rules don't kill freedom: narrow-minded intolerance does" : Race

Hi Race, As with most of

Hi Race, As with most of your writes, this is awesome. I echo what Seren has said. I love the first stanza because I too, have had similar thoughts, (haven't we all!) Your last stanza hammers it all home. A pleasure to read, indeed. Sue

Jim, I just really enjoy writes like this

like the title too! The ones that make us stop and think, reflect on our own actions and the way we treat others. I have to disagree on one point though: “When you stop to rest Upon the slope of moments That is the life you live And realize there is More life down in your past Than in your future,” Hmmmmm….perhaps, in the concrete that is true. I believe a lot depends on the type of upbringing one has had, but… we never know what is possible in our future. We do have the opportunity to affect sooooo much. In my own life, sure I remember things I wish I had not done and things I wish I had. But most of the bad things have faded from their blaring red to pink. A lot of them, I can laugh about now And they don’t seem so detrimental. I suffer from the libra complex, I’m afraid. lol. Still…loved the poem. It is both insightful and well written. (gee, i hope that made sense and wasn't just a ramble to you!) Always, Tonya

Thank you so much for your comment. The first stanza is really about the length of time one has left, the quantity, not the quality, if you see what I mean. And at the end, there are no more chances to change whatever should be changed before you go, so it has to be done in the time that is left, and this is what makes or breaks the latter part of a life; whether you do something to ensure that what you leave behind is good, or just turn your back, feel sorry for yourself, and ignore the crappy things you've done to others. And Tonya...I have yet to see you ramble. heehee. Glad that you enjoyed my poem so much, Tonya. Respectfully Jim "Laws and rules don't kill freedom: narrow-minded intolerance does" : Race

A thought-provoking masterpiece!

Introspection and its trappings are hard things to deal with, much less write about for others to see! This piece proves that you are quite capable of dealing with both! Very nicely done!
