SYLVAN SECRETS

I just talked to an old Ent
   whose limbs were all mossy and bent
   he said his many friends with leaf
   had personalities beyond belief

Told me that the rustling leaves
   and gently sighing wind
   is how  gossip, he receives
   which I'll now pass to you my friend

Cypress trees are sage and solemn
   so quiet in their  marsh
   they almost look a lot like Gollum
   with knees knobby and harsh

Of course a weeping willows sad
   with sorry hanging boughs
   if you've a picture of one glad
   I'd surely like to browse

Sweet gum trees have lots of fun
   they always have a ball
   you know the partys just begun
   when gumballs drop in Fall

All cedars are evergreen
   a truly jealous tree
   as envious as any seen
   the forests all agree

What should I say about "fruit" trees
   who tend toward being 'sweet"
   limp branches yield to any breeze
   they're okay when discreet

Pecan trees have little sense
   most people say they're nuts
   with lumber that is kind of dense
   of jokes they are oft' butts

Cottonwood's so soft and fit
   like favorite well worn shirt
   upon hill sides sunny and lit
   roots in rich but stony dirt

All the pine trees are so proud
   they stand so straight and tall
   but by ice they're easily cowed
   and often made to fall

Redwoods are stuck up,aloof
   looking down upon the others
   I guess that they are living proof
   of  conceit among all brothers

Maple tree relationships
   are often as not tricky
   if perchance the wrong word slips
   thing can become right sticky

Then there's the common old oak tree
   whose great strength is known to all
   and I think that all agree
   it dresses well in fall

As you walk through any woods
   each tree has its own trait
   all willing to display their goods
   if like Ents you'll just slow  your gait
