A COLD ANNIVERSARY
A COLD ANNIVERSARY July 4, the day of America’s gloryChosen before the eyes and the lawWitnessed the tying of nuptial knotsFolks like a nation in concert of statesJoined to celebrate a meaning in marriageAnd sing the anniversary song thereafterWe took as settled what was given freelyUnaware of the dinghy drifting ashore Years passed by, just like yesterdayThe oven fire went out before fifteenThe soup and stew got sour in the potsWe starved on the next anniversary dayThe party that came returned famishedCold wind blew across the verandaI sat alone with distrust, ponderingOn the fate that has befallen the union Exchange of rings, registry treatyA paper proof of love for the realmAttest to a long and obscure reverieWhere we say not, Happy AnniversaryBut the thought of the stunning broodTheir innocent laughter and jokesGive hope for a refreshing beginningAnd reassure me of a home so far away
