The Appetite Killer

The general alarm was sounded loud by Mother shouting high.

Someone left the door open and let in a bloody fly.

Everyone was expected to grab whatever they could

to chase the fly, to catch the fly and get rid of it for good.

Newspaper, swats, spray cans and tea-towels all after the flying invader.

The uninvited guest buzzed away attempting to land on our dinner.

With the paper firmly cast in a roll Dad made the table shake.

Didn’t get it square on, he said. But I reckon I gave it a headache.

My sister grabbed the can of spray and prepared the thing to douse

but Mother screamed No don’t do that you know it’ll drop its maggots!!!

Just leave the spray can over there, you’ll poison all our meal, Mum said.

And she chased it with the tea-towel, flicking it close to poor Dad’s head.

Hey hey take care with that, he said, as the insect flew away,

but Mum was determined it would be caught. Not to live another day.

She waved the tea towel about in the air, like a fanatic with a flag,

and chased the blowfly around the room. An outsider would‘a thought her quite mad.

It ducked around the waving cloth and headed back to the table,

making a beeline for the aromatic meat and the plate of steaming vegetable.

A dozen hands waved madly about. Six voices in unison

yelled at it to get away before our meal was carrion.

It slipped between the curtain and into the louvered window.

Quickly close the latch, we all heard Mother bellow.

Brother reached and flicked the handle of the louver-closing thing

and all throughout our meal that day we listened to it buzzing.

About This Poem

About the Author

Favorite Poets: Favourite poets? So many, so varied. I like particular songs, not necessarily the singer... and the same goes for poetry. I can honestly say though, that Alfred Noyes' The Highwayman was what inspired my love of poetry - my mother began reading it to me when I was still a baby, and it became my favourite bedtime story

Love the ending...

Judy, Well before the ending, I knew were that fly was headed and could hear the buzzing. I really like your word for the louvre-closing thing - the perfect synonym for watchamacallit! Thanks for the visual, the auditory and the mayhem of this universal family! Lisa

Even better when I read it out loud

and I make up funny voices for your Mum and Dad! It flows perfectly, excellent rhythm, keeps me on the edge for the whole story, like a thriller. Australia's unlucky to have such vermin, but more than blessed to have such poetesses as you and others on this site. Just a question-suggestion, here we use not-quite-finished beer bottles as traps for bugs, does that work on blowfies? P.S. glad you like the avatar Judy, I was looking for something else but when I dig for gold and find a diamond, I take it. Antoine

so glad you enjoy it antoine

thank you for your lovely comments make sure you give my parents voices they would be proud of won't you (smile) i don't think that trap works for blowflies they just buzz around the top - i know it works for earwigs..... love to you judy xxxx http://www.strategicpublishinggroup.com/title/TwentyMyPrettyPonies.html

Here...

Not-quite-finished beer bottles is a crime punishable by earwigs! "Good to the last drop" Oh wait, that's Maxwell House coffee. Oh well, same principle applies to not quite finished cups of coffee. But especially beer. Lisa

gotta admit i've never had any chance to try out the theory having never any beer left to leave as bait....... agree with you lisa - i deserve earwigs if i leave a drop xxxxxzzzzzzzzz http://www.strategicpublishinggroup.com/title/TwentyMyPrettyPonies.html
