Swinging

He sits silently on the swing,
His dark hair concealing those baby blue eyes from their surroundings,
His fidgeting fingers, the only sign of life apart from the constant dripping of tears on the barren soil.

His feet hang lifelessly on the ground
Worn bare with endless kicks and squeals of laughter
As boys and girls and lovers fly away from the world below.

Torrents of sorrow and emptiness overwhelm him and ooze down his cheeks
As his shoulders start to heave up and down.
His pain becomes audible and he becomes aware of the burning stares at the back of his neck.
They do nothing to ease his anguish.

He thrusts himself into the cloudy grey sky,
Hurling himself into the oblivion,
Hoping to vanish into the white nothingness.

Two tiny hands take hold of his reality,
Her glistening blue eyes meet his own.
"I'm sorry," she manages through silent sobs.

He takes hold of her hand and hops off the swing...
