Tears from Heaven

On this summers day in June

I stepped into the sunshine.

The heat hit me as I walked

sweat trickled from my forehead.

I hesitated to go out

life these days restrict me

from my sanctuary of hiding in bed.

But amid the sudden downpour

due to the tremendous heat

from the Heaven’s, the rain fell

like cleansing tears from an angel

for a time; I felt complete.

Standing under the pounding rain

I lifted my head to the sky

The clouds were grey, the world darkened

but I sensed the sun was not far away.

I knew the light would smile again

as nature was clearing the air

oh what a joyous feeling today.

Peace and conflict mingled

as the rainstorm fell like heavy tears

I felt like a child out of time

Just for a while as the rain subsided

gone, were my troublesome years.

I love that pelting rain that comes after a heat-wave. It's like a big warm shower from the Heaven's. Xena Quote: Science is what you know; philosophy is what you don't know. - Bertrand Russell

Thank you so much. The weather yesterday was very hot and when I went out the sun was shining, but on the way back home there was a sudden downpour; I got soaked to the skin, but it felt good. Xena Quote: Science is what you know; philosophy is what you don't know. - Bertrand Russell

Thank you so much Stan

I didn’t feel like going out yesterday but I had to. And I was glad I did, as the weather changed from hot to cool brought on by the heavy rain, inspired this poem. It wasn’t a planned write; it just came to me because I felt bad before I went out, but great when I came home. Dear JayCee

That rain-shower yesterday here in Glasgow felt like it was from Heaven. I did look up to the sky so that my face could feel the full force of it, it was wonderful. Thank you so much. Xena Quote: Science is what you know; philosophy is what you don't know. - Bertrand Russell

It was very cleansing to my mood before the downpour. I was hot and miserable and just wanted to get home, to my sanctuary; and suddenly the rain began to pelt down and it was a fabulous feeling. But rain like this is so very short, it stops as quick as it starts; which is such a shame. Xena Quote: Science is what you know; philosophy is what you don't know. - Bertrand Russell

I think your second stanza

is perfect! I have just a few little things I'd like to point out about stanza one. It sounds fine when I read it in my head, but I always read aloud too. It helps me catch the little things that can cause (sometimes big) problems. Line 2: "I stepped outside into the sunshine.", looks fine typed on the screen. But say it aloud. It sounds a little "off" to me. I stumble over the words "outside into". You could adjust it to "out into" or delete "outside". "I stepped [into] the sunshine." Does that sound better to you when you read it aloud? It does to me. Line 5: "At first I was reluctant to go out". Again, it looks fine on the page. Reads okay aloud too! But it could still be improved so that "less is more". We could adjust that line to "[I hesitated] to go out" which would get rid of three words we don't really need. The line is fine the way it is, this is just another option! Line 6: "...life these days [restricts] me" And the last thing is on line 9: "pouring from the Heaven’s the rain fell" You notice how you've repeated "pour" from "downpour" on line 7? Again, it looks fine on the screen, but the whole thing changes when you read aloud. Having that same word so close together usually makes the reader stumble. It's like they get deja vu and they trip over the words. I would suggest deleting "pouring" and making a few punctuation adjustments to get that line nice and smooth. "[from] the [Heavens,] the rain fell" Just some suggestions, tell me what you think! Kelsey "In criticism I will be bold, and as sternly, absolutely just with friend and foe. I've edited it Kelsey

I'm never sure about the semi-colon. I always believed that it's used when you have a sentence that runs with more than one pause. But I don’t know where to put it if there are a few commas? Xena Quote: Science is what you know; philosophy is what you don't know. - Bertrand Russell
Beauregard

Beauregard

the semi colon

is similar to a period/full stop; you use it when the next sentence relies heavily on the previous one but doesn't require the long pause that a period/full stop requires. (see that example there? tee hee!) Commas are for a short pause and connect dependent clauses (that don't make sense when alone) semi-colons are for a moderate pause and connect two related independent clauses (they make sense by themselves, but it helps to have both) periods are for a full pause and they connect independent clauses (they make sense on their own and they can relate, but they don't have to) Make sense? A semi colon can also be used in lists so that you don't overuse your commas and get a run-on sentence (comma splice). A very awesome comic guy (he's not very politically correct, but you've been warned) sums it up very well: http://theoatmeal.com/comics/semicolon Kelsey "In criticism I will be bold, and as sternly, absolutely just with friend and foe. From this purpose nothing shall turn me." -Edgar Allan Poe "If technique is of no interest to a writer, I doubt that the writer is an artist." -Marianne Moore

So

I'm not totally sure, but I think your semi colon should just be a comma. :) Kelsey PS: ignore my line numbers from my suggestions. I'm blind as can be and I think they're off by one! Kelsey's suggestions are wonderful. I find it hard to tell the difference when reading it allowed, I think that's a learning thing too, but with the changes it does read better. Xena Quote: Science is what you know; philosophy is what you don't know. - Bertrand Russell

Xana, the Ewok struck first. *LOL*

Nothing to add to Kelsey's fine critique. Reading aloud is a must and yes, it is a learning thing. Sometimes I will put a finished poem aside for a day, then pick it back up and read it aloud as if it is not my poem. That way I find myself more critical of it. Well done ma'am. The daft this is I read it aloud and it sounded okay, but then when Kelsey gave me the suggestions and I read it allowed again it was so much better. I’m glad you agree that it is a learned thing; this really helps me a lot too. I’ve never had proper help with my poems and this is just so wonderful. Thank you very much. A little at a time goes a long way for someone like me. I do get it when I’m shown what’s wrong. Xena Quote: Science is what you know; philosophy is what you don't know. - Bertrand Russell

I have so enjoyed reading

I have so enjoyed reading this absolutely wonderous, metaphoric write. What a beautifully expressed, descriptive poem, which flows so smoothly from your creative pen Xena. I adore how the heavy rain downpour both changes and elevates your mood - I can relate to that! A pictorial pen gem Xena, well crafted. I thank you for so very kindly sharing it with me. I've written a few poems like this, but didn't realise that it had a recognised form. It's just that sometimes I want to say more per stanza, but try to keep some lines in rhyme, usually every fourth or third line and the last line of each stanza. This is a lovely compliment. Tears from heaven

Rosina I love walking in the rain it hides the tears i cry inside a spiritual cleansing of the soul as the sweet rain falling on a metal roof as notes from natures own orchestra singing soft melodies The pavement beneath my feet all washed anew from the early morning dew Behind the clouds lingers the sun glowing through drying up the rain until it falls again Beautiful just beautiful
