Wild weed

I wrote this after the religious clashes in Nigeria. I just don't understand why we won't tolerate each other and respect each other's opinions and ideology!

Penny against another:

Thunder, as when the clouds toss;

And feather against feather:

A thousand fold a quake’s force.

You are water and I- oil.

Am a wild weed to smother:

Dark, you call my path- I, coarse.

So in blind rage you gather

Knife and spear to cause loss

For you think AM all of US.

Slay me then, Brother

Because you chant “Cross!”

And I mouth “Crescent.”

You call me brother...

what about the ethnic divide, religious bigotry and sentiments that came along with the imported religions? Where is the place of traditional religion, the original owner of the land? What are the contending issues that sparked up the riots? some of them may not have anything to do with religion. Wild weed, what does it mean? This piece makes me to ask for more, thank you and well done for sharing this great write. Best wishes. T.

About the piece...

Thanks. @T: It is true that the poem does not delve more and address what actually sparked off the riots, but it is because it was only intended as a highlight, a glimpse into what happened. Traditional or foreign, religion is part of us. It shouldn't stop us from tolerating each other. I chose "weed" because it felt like either side was trying to get rid of the other and "wild" because of the madness that ensued!
