THE SCIENCE OF CLOUDS

I remember way back when
my oldest son was nine or ten
'twas one of those warm lazy days
went to the dock to catch some rays

We laid on our backs with out speaking
(back before my bones were creaking)
as fluffy white clouds drifted by
he turned his head to catch my eye

"What makes clouds?"he asked me so
I explained as best I know
  thus without further conjecture
  I'll recall my science lecture

Clouds start out as water vapor
(as I quoted from a high school paper)
thats drawn from surface of the ocean
  the heat incurring upward motion

As vapor rises air grows cool
(I blabbered on like an old fool)
  water droplets then condence
you know that this makes perfect sense

Drops by cohesion then combine
  (my exposition going fine)
the sunlight turns this damp mass white
allowing cloud to come to sight

I laid there feeling real smart then
  thinking tale was over when
his next question left me agog
"why does that cloud look like a dog?"

WoW Stan

This is fabulous. You have the gift of poetry in rhyme and everything else that makes a poet a poet. You gave me a much needed smile today. Thank you `Stan The Man`. xxx Xena Quote: Science is what you know; philosophy is what you don't know. - Bertrand Russell

Right up my alley

a touch of science scrounged up in the hopes of better understanding the wonders of nature/beauty/"human condition." 2.1: "with out" --> 'without' 3.4: "I'll" --> 'I recalled' (switches tenses from the rest of the poem which is past tense) 4.3: "thats" --> ' that's ' 4.3: "from surface ocean" --> I think there is a set meter to this poem so suggesting an adjustment to something like "from the surface of the ocean" would be tearing the meter all to hell. A little bit of that line's flow/scansion is lost for the meter's sake. The message isn't lost and the communication isn't jeopardized, but I thought I'd mention it anyway. The short answer to his second question is: Imagination :) The long answer: Most likely has something to do with visual association and the visual cortex of the brain which takes previously learned images and distinguishes them in the random matter of the clouds. "In criticism I will be bold, and as sternly, absolutely just with friend and foe. From this purpose nothing shall turn me." -Edgar Allan Poe
