The Gift

So many songs have been said regarding roses

I fear yet another may appear too cliché.

But the flower I write of was gifted to me

from a loved one who is a long long way away.

Surging, bulging auspiciously

downy soft and rosy-gold radiant

held high on a long emerald leaf-laden stem

stretching toward me in welcome

numerous petals of blood dark blue-red

growing, reaching, in front of my door

barring me.

I had forgotten it was Fathers’ Day.

About This Poem

About the Author

Region, Country: Western Australia, AUS

Favorite Poets: Favourite poets? So many, so varied. I like particular songs, not necessarily the singer... and the same goes for poetry. I can honestly say though, that Alfred Noyes' The Highwayman was what inspired my love of poetry - my mother began reading it to me when I was still a baby, and it became my favourite bedtime story

Lovely Judy

Yes it is Father's Day today. My dad died a long time ago, but my brothers and sisters have children and they still celebrate this day...A beautiful poem Judy. I love the title too. PS. My favourite flower is a white rose...for me it’s a sign of purity and goodness in ones heart. Xena Quote: Science is what you know; philosophy is what you don't know. - Bertrand Russell

thanks everyone

this is a write of an experience i had a few years after my father died. during his life i never missed a fathers' day (i tell a lie - i missed one, but that's another long story) anyway, for the first couple of years after he died i remembered in the morning and wished him a happy father's' day in my mind. then one year i forgot. i arrived home from work that night to be met by the fattest rose i have ever seen growing over the steps of my front door. i swear i never saw a bud there that morning. i thought it may suit as a read of a flower sent to dad from the other side.... if one was looking at in in an anthology of that genre.... thanks again for the comments love judy xxxx sorry to not answer each of you seperately - really busy at the moment....will catch up with you all soon xxx http://www.strategicpublishinggroup.com/title/TwentyMyPrettyPonies.html

hi julie

thanks for visiting and for your comment i think the incident that inspired this poem (sse my comment above) was my father telling me that he was 'not to be forgotten thank you very much' it WAS funny, but at the same time a very spiritual moment thanks again dd love judy xxx http://www.strategicpublishinggroup.com/title/TwentyMyPrettyPonies.html
