Into the land of the grey folk

Upon the hill on solstice eve

As daylight starts to fade

Beneath the oak tree old and gnarled

You’ll find within its shade

A portal to the nether world

Wherein there shines the light

Of faerie folk and goblins

Who have come to claim the night

They roam abroad till dawns light breaks

This land where once they reigned

Until the warm bloods disappear

So it has been ordained

For aeons past, the battles lost

Then exiled to this place

No more to mix with mortal man

Nor gaze upon his face

Whilst walking on an eventide

You should happen on that mound

And feel the air turn still and warm

And hear that ghostly sound

‘twill be the grey folk calling you

Into the world below

Enticing you to step inside

Beyond the lanterns glow

Though venture not into this realm

Enchanting as it be

For once inside, there’s no way back

For all eternity

And I think you've been there!

Fantastic, as your poems usually are! This one differs a tad from your normal humorous pieces, but still has plenty of whimsy to spare! Love it!

Thanks Scribbler, you know I

Thanks Scribbler, you know I had the bare bones of this a few weeks ago but only finished it yesterday, funnily enough I bought a copy of the brothers Grimm complete fairy tales a couple of days ago and I have dipped into it a couple of times, perhaps it helped, who knows? John
