The Pacifier

 

My mother thought up a cunning plan

my brother from his dummy to wean.

One night into the open fire raging

she threw it – no more to be seen.

All gone she said and he nodded his head

and went to bed quite happy.

 

The following night again by firelight

she read him his bed-time story.

When she had finished she closed the book

and handed it to him for storing.

All gone he said as he threw the tome

into the hungry flames.

 

Mum said she never did try that trick again.

Favorite Poets: Favourite poets? So many, so varied. I like particular songs, not necessarily the singer... and the same goes for poetry. I can honestly say though, that Alfred Noyes' The Highwayman was what inspired my love of poetry - my mother began reading it to me when I was still a baby, and it became my favourite bedtime story

They know all about it, they all know more than we suppose, and use it in the most surprising ways when it suits them, in the past they were more tentative, but nowadays, just watch it, they are as sharp as hawks; give them credit for having brains and they will repay you with their own brand of wisdom, yes? Sounds like something I would've done just to get out of having to read another book. I tend to wander in my mind when I read a book, so it usually ends up pointless to start one only to find that by page 3, I’ve had really taken in one word of it.
