Quintessence

The veils of deception are heavy.

Truisms are formed with only half sight.

Absolutes are not pure and unquestionable

and the hand has no choice

but to do as the heart desires.

The greatest gift of understanding

was given us ages past.

To thine own self be true he said.

To your own heart be honest.

Forget false plenary,

the only certainty we can grasp

is ourselves.

So let us forget logic

and sink and seek within,

past emotion, through intuition

and we will find the promised peace.

Know thyself

and in that perceive the only real axiom.

About This Poem

About the Author

Region, Country: Western Australia, AUS

Favorite Poets: Favourite poets? So many, so varied. I like particular songs, not necessarily the singer... and the same goes for poetry. I can honestly say though, that Alfred Noyes' The Highwayman was what inspired my love of poetry - my mother began reading it to me when I was still a baby, and it became my favourite bedtime story

and yet we seek outside ourselves the certainty that we exist?

Ann of Norway Mixed feelings here, but you awoke thoughts that fitted to my own at this moment as you may see in my next posted poem judyanne. "the only certainty we can grasp is ourselves." We are our own consciousness, and only have this body of cells to call our own, and yet we seek outside ourselves the certainty that we exist? How strange we are we human beings in this search for truth, when as you say that too is an absolute and one we cannot know, as every absolute is but a new hypothesis of our existence and as such has no claim to permanence. Love you judyanne annanya.

WoW Judy

How real and full of wisdom are these words you write. You’ve got me stumped again to find a part of this wonderful poem to praise the most. So I’ll just go with the last two lines that says it all...Brilliant. Xena
