My Alexander
By compass and by attitude,Is your bearing sound; Are you a lad of latitude,Whose moxie is unbound? Are you my Alexander,Or just my downer for the day? What empires have you conquered,What monsters did you slay? Are you the bloke that brandishes,His manly love for beer;Or the one with fruit and sandwiches,That picnics far from here? Are you my Alexander,Or a shadow man of clay; Are you his 'doppel-ganger',With your true self in his sway? Does your cloak of clannishness,Sometimes slip a gear;Does the joke of mannishness,Stab you like a spear? Are you my Alexander,Or just a pompous ass?Glib, without the candour,To rise from dross to crass. By bullshit and by platitude,That's how you monkeys rate.Do you rely on servile gratitude,When your flunkies call you great? Are you my Alexander,Am I your vamp Roxanne? What license do you pander,What gold gleams in your pan? Are you my Alexander,Am I your neutered slave? And you think you are no grander,Than the least down-trodden knave! Are you my Alexander,More a skirmish than a fray; Are you my gruff commander,I should die before betray? Are you my Alexander,Am I your avid fan?Or is love just propaganda,Conjoured up by sleight of hand?
