Spring (long ago)

When I feel the east breeze caress my hair,

watch the red sun sink quietly low,

when I smell the soft flower of spring in the air

I think of my home of long ago, long ago.

I close my eyes and see it reflected,

taste the smell in memory's shadow.

Spring dancing, floating, chasing rainbows

around my home of long ago, long ago.

The wide open spaces so gifted to me,

calm balmy nights, ahigh candles aglow,

and indescribable sunrises and sets

surround my home of long ago, long ago.

My ears again hear the sounds of soul

the birds carolling and calves sounding low

as new life aroused by Persephone

blesses my home of long ago, long ago.

Multihued carpets of sensuous petals

dress the land in a glorious show

and seduce the softly pencilled butterflies

as they ripple past my home of long ago, long ago.

I taste fresh warm air giving breath

to new branches swaying slow

in the gums and wattles and eucalypts

that perfumed my home of long ago, long ago.

I feel the calm, the serenity

that only from great love can grow

and I miss the innocence and simplicity

I knew in my home of long ago, long ago.

About This Poem

About the Author

Region, Country: Western Australia, AUS

Favorite Poets: Favourite poets? So many, so varied. I like particular songs, not necessarily the singer... and the same goes for poetry. I can honestly say though, that Alfred Noyes' The Highwayman was what inspired my love of poetry - my mother began reading it to me when I was still a baby, and it became my favourite bedtime story

Sit beside the river of your mind and watch

Ann of Norway "taste the smell in memories shadow."..I wonder if when we personify memory that it shouldn't be spelt 'Memory's shadow'? I don't KNOW. "......, sky with candles aglow,"...I don't know why this seemed a bit trite? "My ears again hear the sounds of soul" .....I would like MY soul What a sensuous verse this one is judyanne, yow, almost touching on the 'bit much' and yet its so delicious isn't it? Sensuous petals, but the butterflies rippling, do they ripple it is difficult for me to picture this, they could dapple, or...? Oh lovely in a warm country breathing Spring into the trees and vegetation lovely thought... "I taste fresh warm air giving breath to new branches swaying slow in the gums and wattles and eucalypts......................................I like eucalyptus? that perfumed my home of long ago, long ago." The only way to reach that simplicity again is just the way you have here, sit beside the river of your mind and watch the elections glint back memories to your present, and absorbed in them, you are again in that state of simplicity, it never leaves you, if one only taps its secret source and gives Spring to one's old mind again, poetry does that doesn't it, it renews youth, the wonderful things of long ago are real and present now. Love to your memory judyanne, long may it wander in your "long ago" annanya

thanks annanya for the edit

thanks annanya for the edit - i actually noticed the typo with 'memories' as i logged off and thought it could wait 'til today for correction. trust you to see it. i have fixed it, thank you. i have also changed verse 3 line 2 as it was annoying me too and my tongue kept tripping there. i wrote this rather quickly and submitted as i was tired before really giving it a good read through. no doubt there'll be more edits as time goes on. i already have another verse i am trying to decide whether to add or not. “My ears again hear the sounds of soul” is what i want to say - all soul eucalypts stays as that is the name of the tree as are gums and wattles. eucalyptus is more the smell, the adjective, and i'm talking about the trees branches etc xxxx thank you again annanya for your lovely thoughts and comments hugs across the equator from judyanne xxx http://www.strategicpublishinggroup.com/title/TwentyMyPrettyPonies.html
