"JUST WORDS"
"It's just words" is often said
by those whose wits are dense as lead
or by those who never thought
of all the joys some words have brought
Have they never heard the speeches
that led to warriors storming beaches?
or brought a bitter war to end
by turning former foe to friend
Or heard Anthony bury Caesar
(now that was a real rabble pleaser)
or Lincoln in the midst of war
at Gettysberg say"Four score...."
I guess they never had high dreams
like Martin Luther King it seems
Or in England's darkest wartime night
heard Winston say just where they'd fight
Did they not hear that older guy
talk of a road less traveled by
perhaps they've never had a lover
speak sweetly to them under cover
But surely they've been hurt before
by hard words piercing to their core
or heard a joke that was so funny
it made eyes tear and nose get runny
The words they refer to as "just"
can turn disquiet into trust
or in midst of loss's grieving
stop trembling lip ,and shoulders' heaving
I guess I'll never understand
how they dismiss so out of hand
the changes "only words"have wrought
on folks' beliefs and even thought
And so to all be reassured
there's power in the lowly word
by those whose wits are dense as lead
or by those who never thought
of all the joys some words have brought
Have they never heard the speeches
that led to warriors storming beaches?
or brought a bitter war to end
by turning former foe to friend
Or heard Anthony bury Caesar
(now that was a real rabble pleaser)
or Lincoln in the midst of war
