Evil

Twisted cruelty seems so prevalent.

Murders, rapes reported each day.

And mankind’s abuse to helpless animals

makes me ponder how we lost our way.

People perform manoeuvres malevolent

to the pain of others impervious.

In savage, violent, barbaric callousness

seemingly taking a joyful purpose.

Look into indifferent eyes.

They’re hard, unkind, iniquitous.

Listen to them describe their crimes.

They sound so detached and pitiless.

Ruthless, merciless, sadistic, venomous.

They perform abuse with hearts so cold

that it begs one to ask the question -

does everybody have a soul?

About This Poem

About the Author

Region, Country: Western Australia, AUS

Favorite Poets: Favourite poets? So many, so varied. I like particular songs, not necessarily the singer... and the same goes for poetry. I can honestly say though, that Alfred Noyes' The Highwayman was what inspired my love of poetry - my mother began reading it to me when I was still a baby, and it became my favourite bedtime story

I’ve taken to not watching

I've taken to not watching the news for a while, probably burying my head in the sand but it's all so depressing. You have a wonderful heart Judyanne, you care about the terrible things that are happening to people. Keep safe Judyanne, Love to you Mand

I agree also Judy

It seems the ruthless get more ruthless as the days go on. I am also experiencing in our own community here the devastation and senseless acts of some, too horrid to mention in here. Life around us is not what it was many years ago that is for sure. Good one here gal Love,Mona xoxxo TIME well spent is TIME well lived

evil

To paraphrase a quote I heard some where:"In order for evil to prevail good men need merely do nothing." All people have souls, but some of them are black and cold as the depths of space.

I like your poem but odnt

I like your poem but odnt really agree evil is more prevelant in todays era than any other, if thats what your getting at. Nazis communists crusades middle ages some pretty sick things have happened and sadly will continue to, only now as you mention in the second line it is, reported each day and it does seem the crimes are more joyous, thats a part of the problem and I choose to avoid as much news as possible. Soul? we all have one or no-one does. Do you believe in redemption, again kicking a cat or mass murder, same ball game.

you'd probably be surprised what i think nodform

not the normal run of the mill belief i'm afraid and actually i do believe we all have a soul the write was not necessarily how i see the world - more just musing - how i see things is much too complicated for one poem and yes, i'm sure evil just seems more prevalent because of the immediate media reporting these days - (and there are more of us too) thanks for commenting love judy xxx http://www.strategicpublishinggroup.com/title/TwentyMyPrettyPonies.html

as mand said, your compassion shines through

this litany of evil. It makes it hard to care too much, the temptation to bury oneself away from it all. I tend to agree that there is probably no more "percentage" of evil today, just more people to do it and more reporting of it. If I do have one article of faith though (despite my Rand reference) it is that there is no inate evil in humanity, no original sin, it comes from circumstance, environment and beliefs. And surely greed and lust for power would be the prime movers of it. I think your poem stands as it is, but could perhaps gain in substance with a wee look at causes and cures. A big ask, of course, Cheers, Jess, Reprehensibly irrepressible, "the alleged short-cut to knowledge, which is faith, is only a short-circuit destroying the mind." [Ayn Rand, Atlas Shrugged]

i missed your comment while i was away

a wee look at causes and cures - truly jess you jest!!! a wee look? it would take a volume of encyclopedia of poems to even scratch the surface. but i agree, i don't believe we were born evil (or 'born into sin') as some theologists and sociologist claim - i'm a 'clean slate' kinda girl. i try not to think of the wickedness around - bury my head in the sand (i'm a sandgroper, remember?) - and just look after my own little corner of the world and those in it that i care about. thanks for reading and commenting jess. love judy xxx http://www.strategicpublishinggroup.com/title/TwentyMyPrettyPonies.html
