Love's Blasphemy:

He placed his lips on every door
And every wall and every stone
Through out the eastern lands
He kissed the feet of woman and girl
Because they held her likeness
It was said he sang the humble song
That every face was a cup of light
"Is he a prophet?" They wondered
"No he is a madman, his love is
The love of blaspemy" that is what
The men said but the women knew better

In every eye her love was stored
Like the treasure-house of angels
Because of this they beat him with sticks
And sneered at his strangness in their vanity
"This is his fate and of all lost lovers
Who have fallen from God's perfect graces
This is his fate" The watchers exclaimed
And looked on with a gaze though unchanged.
In the crowds heart was the spirit of Iblis

In the wilderness he learnt the dialect of beasts
And a new poetry flowed with the element's song
There he was visited by the demon of her love
There she came to him she was veiled by the moon
"O lover, o poet, o beloved of mankind,
Why must you call me from my husbands bedside?
Has not my heart become halved for thee
Is that not the limit of thy love for me?
Our union was heavenly blessed by God
That we made love with gazes a glance and that's all
My soul is in tatters, my body forlorn
I am crucified by love in this universe of one!"

Envoi:

Two lovers am i
The one who turns to God
And the one who turns from Him
To you. This is why they beat you
And why we must be punished
Because you spoke my name
If my husband only knew my heart
He would kill you...

The Prophet's Prayer

The Prophet's Prayer for the Envious People: O Giver of stability and sustenance, Set free mankind from uncertainty and doubt. In work which is worthy of performance, Let them be steadfast and certain. Give them patience and weigh down their scales And set them free from vile deceivers all. O Merciful One, save them from envy So they do not become like envious Iblis. How foolish man is envious over all these passing Things: wealth, comforts, bodies that will die! See how things full of envy battle, And kill their kith and kin! How lovers full of desire for false forms Spill each other's blood in vain! (Jalaluddin Rumi AD 1207-73)
