Gaia Haiku ~ A poem to my children on Mother's Day ~ May 9, 2010

Mother Earth and Father Sky
never deny their children
my brothers, sisters

~~~~~
how shall I make amends
when the stream gurgles with laughter
and the light chases the shadows away?
have I not denied you three times?
see how my tears of sorrow flow like rivers
in these lines that pass through
me
like poems
I leave behind my errant ways
meandering in your memories' breath
soon the stillness shall rise and shine,
I shall be resurrected in your thoughts.
Worms. Earth’s movers and
Worms. Earth's movers and shakers. Have you seen the documentary, *Dirt*? Truly, everyone on the planet should. I saw the hour-long version on PBS on earth Day, April 22. Everything in life is recycled energy. In that way there is no death, no beginning, no end. Thanks for reading. ~A p.s. Almost forgot to thank you for introducing me to Beckett's brilliant poem. Thanks for reading Annie,
Thanks for reading Annie, there's a lot we don't know about one another. That's why I tend to lean towards compassion though I have to speak my truth. And sometimes it may not feel compassionate at times. It's what mothers do. ;-) ~A "If you think you're free, there's no escape possible." ~ Ram Dass
Happy Mother's Day!...
my friend. Hope it's a good one for you! i like your comment about recycled life. thought of it often. a friend once asked me to tell her how to write a poem. i said that's a difficult request at best. i asked, "if you throw an egg against the wall, what do you see? a mess? an egg running down the wall? what of the egg's coming to existence and it's sacrifice? does the egg not feed other things even though it now seems to be wasted on the wall? in this manner the egg is constantly reborn. doesn't the egg also feed you, if only through your imagination?" she replied..." what the hell are you talking about? you're strange." i said, "yes. so are eggs. they're also pretty wonderful. maybe you should take up golf."
As one of the earth’s more
As one of the earth's more beautiful, and contoversial mommys (gaia-an interesting hypothesis from scientists who can't figure out why exactly ice-skates slide on ice).But as the earth is the sustaining womb by which we are all interdependant let us love it, and each other, as we all make amends of our errant ways. The strawberries are your children. Happy mothers day my Anna of the bannanas B
Gaia has its origins in
Gaia has its origins in Greek mythology. Gaia is a Titan personifying earth, worshiped as the earth mother goddess. She was the mother of 12 titans (12 is a recurring number, no?), one of which Iapetus, the father of Atlas (also a moon of Saturn). Gaia is known as a self-sustaining system/entity by scientists. Just as humans are. We don't know much about either, really, but we do know how to destroy it and each other. Sadly. Though I think there is a shift of awareness blowing from the 4 corners of the earth. ~A "If you think you're free, there's no escape possible." ~ Ram Dass
this is beautiful!the haiku
this is beautiful! the haiku is an earthy one (pun intended) with universal meaning i'm not a great fan of haiku/senryu, but i so appreciate a well written one... and the rest of this write? well...it actually moved me visuals can move me easily (i can be a real sooky la la), but i find it hard to be moved, really moved, by the written word liking/appreciating etc, are very different from being moved the line, have i not denied you three times? immediately brought to mind Judas denying Jesus 3 times, after Jesus was arrested i don't thnk, or mean to imply that i found a religious undercurrent to this, because i didn't...it's just that that line struck me again, i find this beautiful your last stanza almost brought a lump to the throat so, so much contained within the lines of this write i've not read a great deal of you, but of what i have, this is close to my fav cheers p
Thank you for your vision
Thank you for your vision (beautiful eyes, looking for, at, what I wonder?). Though not in of the true *haiku* forms of 5-7-5 which I most often use, it is actually a haikuesque poem...which hopefully, always evokes deep feelings in few words. And since the religion I grew up in was Catholic, Peter's denial is indeed part and parcel of the poem. As is resurrection as a theme. Thank you for appreciating all its nuances. Sometimes I hammer to break down doors of perception, sometimes I just open them, gently. I always said my mom had an iron fist inside a velvet glove. ~A "If you think you're free, there's no escape possible." ~ Ram Dass
it is my Anna's, my sister's poem and I love her for it.
Ann of Norway The religious connotations die hard and flavour our everyday thoughts almost unawares, and yet the analogy is so fine, and the fact that you are a mother I never doubted, as here is evidence of the great sense of love of the earth and all its inhabitants made into a metaphor for the intimacy of family, the family close by and then expanded out to the family of all peoples of the world, embraced in one poem and it is my Anna's, my sister's poem and I love her for it. I’m not sure *religious
I'm not sure *religious connotations* should ever die, let alone *die hard*. They are part and parcel of each and every one of our fabric of being. (That is if we have them, if we don't then that is true.) There is great joy to be lived when we find we are unbound by the thoughts we are held by... manacles, chained to our unexamined lives. Thank you for your love Ann, you know of all the gifts, it is the one that keeps on giving. The more you give the more, the more returns. ~ "If you think you're free, there's no escape possible." ~ Ram Dass
Beautiful words Kail
I love this stanza. I don't know what it means to you, but it has a depth of meaning to me... how shall I make amends when the stream gurgles with laughter and the light chases the shadows away? PS. Is this a photo of yourself...it reminds me of some photos I still have of my mum and dad...it's lovely and brings tears to my eyes. Rosina xena465
Actually, it’s a photo my
Actually, it's a photo my daughter emailed me yesterday from her Iphone to my laptop yesterday from 1974. (Isn't technology great?) She and I were going to an adventure in NJ, (she was almost 6, I was almost 28)..to live with my x. I had huge tears in my eyes, saying goodbye to my mom and dad. It looks like the old sepia prints I have of my mom and dad. It's in colour but the colours are lost & faded in translation. I had just dyed my hair dark, coincidentally my x didn't like blonds. Lol. His last girlfriend dyed her hair blond from her natural brunette. I digress, the poem had depth of meaning to me so at least that wasn't lost in translation. ;-) ~A "If you think you're free, there's no escape possible." ~ Ram Dass
Hi Kail
It was the colour that made me think that it was older, as a lot of my mum and dad's old photos are black & white too, and a little crumpled, but they are precious to me. The stanza that I liked reminded me of a poem I wrote about an image I saw while staring into water and it disappeared and I wanted it back so badly, just to see her again. I knew that your meaning wouldn't have meant the same as me, but also knew that it had a profound meaning too. I just wanted to thank you for giving it back to me with your lovely words. Indeed-
Gaia, is the mother which gave birth to the heavens and all in it, including the titans and the gods. We've come to know her as mother earth; the sole inhabitor and possessor of the third ring.(three being another recurring important theme, as you once observed!) :) " I once walked a mile in your shoes and found myself with love." Anon. Is it odd that poets seem to spend a lot time writing in the third person about themselves meeting theirselves on a lonely road? Maybe. But this drama from a distance is fascinating to behold! Now.... where was I?
