Sick of Religion? Me Too!

do you believe in god
why do you believe in god
is it because your easily led
and you take the word of some
vicar who quotes from a bible
or  because you've got to
or you'd be beaten black and blue
and for those of us  who
do ask awkward questions
and  are told you must have faith
don't you find that patronising
even bordering on the childish side
as for me
well
I don't believe in god
never have done if I'm honest
what I do believe in is also unprovable
I can't magic out some foolproof evidence
so I keep my beliefs private
and you know what
I wish the christians and the jews
and the muslims and any other religion
I havent mentioned could do the bloody same
please keep your faith private
go on just give it a try
keep jesus to yourself
and mohammed too
and those of the jewish faith
and those of  you  who are satanists
keep your good news to yourself
and let us heathens and kafirs
infidels and atheists
have some well deserved peace and quiet!!!

and it's not just outright proselytising or preaching, people show their faith in other insidious smug ways and attitudes, much harder to tell them to fuck off. Wrong

Firstly there is nothing angry about Lenny's poem and secondly some of us who are not insecure and thus do not need to shout at people in order to assuage our inadequacies, some of us look at Lenny's poem and cheer. Because it is my considered opinion that the louder one shouts their faith, the less faith that person has. Rather than faith they have an empty place in their life and soul and believe by screaming and shouting that it is filled, by berating and castigating those who do not hold their beliefs, by pitying those whom they actually envy and fear for their strength and clarity of purpose and peace of mind, that by doing all of this and claiming salvation they will somehow not be a slave to the whims of others. Or, to put it more simply, they believe by hating they will find love. And that's bullshit. Lenny's poem is an expression of the will of Christ, your pity is arrogance writ large. You are, of course, welcome to express any opinion you wish, as am I. --Jonathan Annoying the world, one person at a time (Group discounts available)

Excellent message, minor flow issues

We could not agree more when it comes to the message you are stating and I too applaud you for it. The poem itself has a couple of flow issues and although you have shunned punctuation in most places, the appearance of punctuation unexpectedly may give the reader pause where you did not intend. So I'll recast the poem with no punctuation expect a consistent use of apostrophes and add a few line breaks I believe will aid in smoothing out the flow. Modified lines are [BRACKETED]. These are suggestions only, of course. You are welcome to use all, some, or none as you desire. --------------------- do you believe in god why do you believe in god is it because your easily led and you take the word of some vicar who quotes from a bible or because you’ve got to or you’d be beaten black and blue and for those of us who do ask awkward questions and are told you must have faith don’t you find that patronising even bordering on the childish side as for me well I don’t believe in god never have done if I’m honest what I do believe in is also unprovable I can’t magic out some foolproof evidence so I keep my beliefs private and you know what I wish the christians and the jews and the muslims and any other religion [I haven't mentioned could do the bloody same] please keep your faith private [go on just give it a try] keep jesus to yourself and mohammed too and those of the jewish faith and those of you who are satanists keep your good news to yourself and let us heathens and kafirs infidels and atheists have some well deserved peace and quiet -------------------------------------- --Jonathan Annoying the world, one person at a time (Group discounts available)

Jonathan ...

I like your suggested rendition, but would also second Jess's suggested fix. And as to Lenny, bravo! on position taken ... and held. From birth well into early adulthood, I was surrounded (suffocated) by Christians, most of the Fundamentalist stripe. Glad to say I've pretty much freed myself of them; although, like the tail wagging a dog, they've managed to affect my life far more than I'd wish. Kudos, Chuck

What? No Lions!

I've just logged on for a brief visit and was delighted to see so many positive responses! To each one of you I want to express my sincere appreciation! I see I have a little editing to do when I return, thanks for being eagle eyed! Also reference to punctuation - or lack of it! Thanks Pugilist, and appreciate your suggestions, which I will mull over! And finally to Anne - me angry?! No! I don't do anger! Only when it matters and serves a positive purpose, such as when my Mum had a leg amputation due to medical negligence - I certainly did anger on that occasion! I’m afraid Lenny was

I'm afraid Lenny was probably replying to the very *Christianity* that you espouse, Annie. We all love you. But did you know that historically, oppressed peoples hang on to Christianity as a way out, as a way to live through the inequities and horrors created by the very good people that taught Christianity? Your lineage just might be a result of that. As far as I know, peoples stolen from Africa and made slaves in America were not *Christians*. Just a thought, dear. ~A "If you think you're free, there's no escape possible." ~ Ram Dass

You can tell a private discussion

Because it is not a public response to a submitted piece. If you want to have a private conversation with Lenny, PM him, it's not really that hard. This tactic of first being arrogant and then claiming others are afraid to talk with you is silly at best and although is a tactic practiced by people who claim they are Christian, is most definitely not a Christian action or value. Honestly Annie, I pity people like you who are so frightened that they must demean the beliefs of others in order to feel alive. It's sad. I await your reply, if you do not reply to everything I have said then it must mean you admit I am right. Really? Does it mean that? Or does it just mean that you believe I have said nothing of value and therefore it would not be worth your time to respond in any manner? Think about it Annie, Lenny's ignoring your arrogance and childish accusations is a response. He is telling you that nothing you say is of value. Lenny is being nice to you. And you can't even see it. --Jonathan Annoying the world, one person at a time (Group discounts available)

What Can I say

A very lot. True to myself, true to my faith, and secure enough in my faith that I do not have to pretend that I am better than others or pretend to pray for them in order to make myself appear more pious or moral. But that's just me, other people are welcome to rant and rave all they desire, just be prepared to get better than you can give. Why? Because I am not insecure in my faith and need no false bravado. --Jonathan Annoying the world, one person at a time (Group discounts available)

The colour Purple!

Hi Girls i know that when it comes to these matters of religion and politics that it can be a really steamy debate but i would just like to add this is why its steamy as every individual has their own thoughts. it doesnt matter why people are different we just are things can happen in life that send us away from believing, and things can happen that pulls us to believe but over all has any one seen jesus? not me however i see both sides of the coin not being religous my self and i can just ask did any one else ever watch the colour purple, because i have seen it a million times and my god i cry like a baby every time! its a film about a women who couldnt have had a worst life but because of her beliefs she survived. what ever we beleive in is our key to survival. Thank you i feel like im on a euro star train!!!!!!! Much love to each and every one and i respect you all for who you are! shirley harrison

good grief..is there anyone

good grief..is there anyone out there who is able to critique this as a poem rather than as an opinion? can everyone just pull their head in? ..................... i like the strength of your opinion here, but i think it could be harnessed to produce a stronger write. there are a few grammatical errors, and i think the line breaks could be changed in a couple of places to give more emphasis to your intent strong emotional content cheers p.

Hi p, Both Jonathan and I

Hi p, Both Jonathan and I did. Speaking of critiquing, poetry and poetry being critiqued, it seems to me the more religious one is the less that one can take it (critique & disagreement)... *ego-self's* religion is very narrow-minded. ~A "If you think you're free, there's no escape possible." ~ Ram Dass

A...you say the more religious

A...you say the more religious one is, the less they can take critique and disagreement. sooooooo true my asking people to pull their heads in was a very tongue-in-cheek line...not said with any severity whatsoever. in travelling around neoland, i've come across so much religious crap, that it's starting to do my head in! not religious poetry, people are entitled to write about whatever they want to of course, but the fall-out from the poetry and subsequent comments. it seems there are precious few who are able to view religious poetry objectively. if people were only able to put aside personal beliefs, and critique and discuss, i mean really discuss, then i think that there would be a lot more tolerance of faiths. i'd like to believe that open, adult discussion of any subject, but particularly religion, would naturally bring about levels of acceotance and maybe even understanding. a bit utopic of me to think so?...perhaps. ...in a comment of yours (i forget which one) you mentioned there being no gender in zen (or something like that) i answered that i knew nothing of zen, but would like to know more...i've had a little look into it. i think it would be challenging for me to engage in it, as i've never been able to meditate. what struck a chord with me though, is the belief of enlightenment attained through realization, rather than through theoretical knowlege...that seems a profound truth to me. and then, that got me thinking...does that mean we would all come to our own truths? would we all have a different perception of the one thing? or would there be a universal truth that we all reach? (at this point i needed a lay down and a cold cloth to the forehead) as much as i avoid religious debate, i will say this; it seems to me that each faith has something to offer. as i'm saying this, i feel as if i'm going all 'zen', because my very next thought is, what if all faiths are really one faith? what's that saying? when you're in a hole, stop digging... i'm putting my shovel down. thank you a, for making me think...i mean that. (even though i now need a PARACETEMOL!)

;-)“An unexamined life is

;-) "An unexamined life is not worth living." Attributed to various Greeks, including Socrates, Plato and a letter Croecus wrote to the Oracle. One thing I have learned is it's not about what our faith is but how we *practice* it. I abide as near as possible to *do no harm* a Buddhist precept, but I do not suffer fools. Even though I have at times, been foolish. Another *truth* is how we walk our talk. It speaks much louder about our *faith* than we ever can. ~A "Just as what you dream is your own and no one else can observe it, so the world you see is your own." ~ Nisargadatta

The critique of the poem was presented

Really, the only thing that went pear shaped hear was annies horribly reactionary, parroting and ill-informed attack. Again I say, annie, I love you but parroting dogma is not intelligent feedback or helpful in any way. I do not wish to demean you, you demeaned yourself by not thinking and instead reacting with blind dogma. That is the sort of non-thinking that breeds terrorism. Religious banter

As overlord of the third battalion, infantry, Jehovah's Witnesses, I am obliged to warn all of you that my mixed sex brigades are all paired up and ready to appear on your doorsteps at my signal. Each and every one of you would benefit from a long, long , long discussion on the joy of blind belief in the supernatural. Provision of tea to my troops is desirable but not essential. Ian p.s. Liked the poem's sentiments, but the flow needs revision

I second Jess, Jonathan and Kail's critiques, Lenny

I'm glad I stumbled upon this piece. Living in the Bible Belt as someone who has denounced Christianity...is...well...hell. I'm glad there are other's who understand! I'm sick of religion! Why can't we all just go about our own way without bashing or threatening damnation? And also, pleiades, you will find that the only people who do critique poetry here, will do so unbiased. The rest, in general, will not offer suggestions, just throw their opinions in like it's the one true way. Or they're like Tam and they'll bring some much needed comedic relief :) Looking forward to your update, Lenny! Kelsey

You are *young* enough to be

You are *young* enough to be my grandaughter, Kelsey, and I respect the knowledge, compassion and intelligence that you possess. You have a better grip on things than many adults in my generation. I will tell you this much, there comes a time when we deny what we have avered and visa versa. Christianity's main precept is to love one another and love God. And like the immortal line in Les Miz: "to love another person is to see the face of God." I have assimilated all religions & practices into my life, and use the best of them to *practice* my life in all its aspects, relationships. We're all learning how it is to be human..how the universe is a loving and compassionate place even though out ward circumstances would seem otherwise. After all we are here, aren't we? Some of us are further along the journey, that's all. And like the saying goes, one doesn't need to throw the baby out with the bathwater. Life that is poetry itself is our connection. A very very deep connection. ~A "Just as what you dream is your own and no one else can observe it, so the world you see is your own." ~ Nisargadatta
