A Poetic Pondering

Despise my rhyming, if you must,
and even my conceit,
but never disregard my true panache
few, if any, share my lust
for making sounds repeat,
or my innate intolerance for trash

Where have all the Poets gone?
consider this, I pray,
perhaps to some new plane of virgin thought
a place where no man is a pawn
of those who would betray
the very essence of what life has taught

Skills of grammar, poise, and truth,
that make our verses ring,
like echos in the hearts of lesser men
forever saying words of sooth
that cause their souls to sing
with one brave voice the praises of the pen

Never was it my intent
to crucify the dead,
or cause the living to despise their worth
but merely just to circumvent
the lies our eyes have read
and justify the meaning of their birth

In saying this, I've said it all,
take it as you will,
these words propose no new philosophy
I'll gladly take my curtain call
and leave you thinking still,
of ways to slay this poet that is me

Thanks, Licia!

I think many may disregard my little blurb at the bottom of this submission, and will no doubt get over-zealous in their replies, but I do thank you so much for your kind words!

a point of view

Hi Lonnie, A poet is born not made...rhyme is good...non-rhyme is equally good. A poet speaks his/her thoughts in a way that creates a reaction. There are poets who produce powerful writes and not a single word rhymes...if you actually analyse those poems , you might descern poetic devices that are used such as repitition, alliteration, assonance, metaphor, onomatopoeia, simile or personification. As intellectual as creating rhyming sounds with the lexis. When you understand the rules, you can break them. Keep an open mind. Poetry is a broad church. Ells x

as i said...a matter of opinion...

I stated that at the beginning....and I'm not being critical. I like your work...it has an honestly...but it's not the only style I like. Where have all the poets gone?...they are right here!!!!! I think it's disengenuous to say you didn't want to cause a reaction...why write it then? Interesting.

“To thine own self be

"To thine own self be true." I've never deterred from that, no matter how I am and have been disparaged or ignored. That goes as far back as my poetry, my own sense of self. Poets are cut from the same cloth, though our styles my differ, our subject matter differing. Thank you for the reminder, Lonnie. ~A "The plain man is familiar with blindness and deafness, and knows from his everyday experience that the look of things is influenced by his senses, but it never occurs to him to regard the whole world as a creation of his senses." ~ Ernst Mach

poetic pondering

what many forget is that poetry was originally written in rhyme in order to help in memorizing stories to pass on orally. One of the oldest examples of this is the epic poem BEOWULF.NEVER apologize for writing in rhyme......or any other form

Lon

Scribbler just said it all. We all have our different styles and our preferences. No one tyle etc is wrong or better than the other. However I can truly say that over the years that I have been on this site, I have from time to time come across "poetry" or so called that does not even qualify as such. I believe this is what you mean in your second stanza Chrys

I Don't really relish...

I don’t really relish .....the last line Why slay? Continue to play… The dictionary is fraught And Why worry Newer words shall come to thee And Lesser poets of my ilk Shall continue Sir To read thee WE the poorer lesser poets in ur estimate still queue for greater poets like THEE like thee like thee
