On A Homeless Man's Death

A homeless man lay dying
On a bleak and wintry day
People purposely avoided him
As if he was in their way

God’s angels watched in wonder
Surely, someone would care
To help this fellow human
But, they only acted unaware

He had helped a threatened woman
He fought to save her life
And the man that tried to harm her
Attacked the homeless man with his knife

People kept on walking
As tears fell down his face
The life poured from inside him
As he prayed for dying grace

Dear Lord, I tried to save her
I think she got away
Be near me as I die, Lord
Help me Lord, I pray

I’m ready Lord, to meet you
My life’s been filled with strife
I have no home to go to
I’ve had a painful life

I’ve been to Vietnam, Lord
My soul is sad and scarred
And living on the street
Is lonely, cold, and hard

Most people, they reject me
They do not understand
And when I leave this street, Lord
Please hold me in your Hands

Then, The Lord said:

My son, I understand you
I never had a home
I was rejected by my people
I was killed by my very own

I know the pain you’ve gone through
I see that no one cares
People can be greedy
Some don’t like to share

That’s why I came to get you
On this bleak and wintry day
I know your heart’s been lonely
I hear you when you pray

I wanted to make sure
They knew how much you cared
That’s why I chose you, son
To save the life I spared

Now come home, my dear child
Your soul is finally free
I’ve been waiting for you
You’ll spend eternity with me

touching

great write. my only problem is the beginning where all the people pass the dead body by without notice or at least a enough to make a phone-call (though, realize this critique is not about the poem or style, just the contents ideas), i find many many people would almost love being the person to find a dead human, like taking credit for something. maybe it's just me, but i can't see a crowd of people seeing a dead man and doing nothing. got me thinkin' there for a whole minute. thanks. especially from someone who's known a few forgotten t_f

I understand...

Though, this actually happened, yesterday. The security cameras caught several people walking by the man. One little moron took pictures of him. One man turned him over and then walked away. This man intercepted an attack on a woman. The attacker then stabbed the homeless man. No one cared at all. Thank you very much for reading my work and I do appreciate your comments. catherine

to think people even actually stood there and took pictures of this man as he lay there dying...there are no words to say how cruel and disgusting the people are! catherine

Dear wolfycat

brilliant poem I think I saw the same news here in australia a homeless man was helping a woman being robbed they had video footage ... he was stabbed and left by passing pedestrians to die for an hour and a half I was horrified that people would walk past a dying man makes you wonder ... kind regards Jayne-Chloe ("Quote:- Death is the great adventure beside which moon landings and space trips pale into insignificance. It is so horrifying...

Hi Jane-Chloe, It is an awful thing that not one person stopped to help him. I wrote this as a tribute to the dying man. Thank you so much for reading and adding your thoughts on this terrible event. Kind Regards, catherine

It is disturbing...

Hi Nicole, Thank you so much for reading and for adding your thoughts on this tragic event! I cannot fathom that people were unwilling to help a fellow human:( I do not know who finally helped. They did not show that on the news that I watched. Best Wishes, catherine

Hi Raj...

You are very kind to say so.I did not want to focus on the uncaring people that did not help this poor man. I did want to focus on his marvelous deed and the fact that we should not look down on another because we never know where another has been. We have only walked in our own shoes. This was a tribute to a person of great value that people avoided. He took a chance and gave his life trying to help someone else. We need more people like him in this world. Thank you so much for reading and for your encouraging, kind comments. ~ peace to you ~ catherine
