The Flammarion Woodcut (Plutonic Sonnets 117)
’Neath yellow sky lie fields and tree of green
On a flat Earth. And in that yellow sky
Are Sun and Moon and stars, easily seen;
And on or ’neath a dome all these things lie.
Beyond this world as it to us appears
Lies a blue realm of things that truly are,
Where planets roll, as in celestial spheres,
From which the dome seems ’ranged our eyes to bar.
And at the lower left, in scarlet gown,
A weary pilgrim, who at last has found
The very place at which the dome comes down
To meet the Earth, crawls weakly on the ground.
Yet head and hand break through, as if to bond
Forever with the majesty beyond!
